CC Rallies to Defeat No. 1 Trinity, Complete Weekend Sweep

The No. 4 Colorado College volleyball team overcame a six-point deficit late in the fourth set to even the match, then scored eight of the final nine points in the fifth set to complete its weekend sweep of No. 1 Trinity University with a 25-23, 18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-9 victory on Saturday morning at Reid Arena.

"The team showed a ton of resilience coming back after being down 2-1," head coach Rick Swan said. "They believed in themselves all weekend. Georgia (Mullins) was outstanding, offensively and defensively, in both matches. Isabelle (Aragon-Menzel) ran a well balanced offense setting up our attackers for great success. She came up huge and showed her senior leadership especially in the fifth set."

Trailing 18-12 in set No. 4, CC scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the score on a service ace by Isabelle Aragon-Menzel. The teams traded side outs until Colorado College scored the final four points on kills by Isabella Lipacis, Georgia Mullins and a pair of Trinity hitting errors.

Neither team led by more than two points early in the fifth set, but after a blocked shot gave TU an 8-7 lead, kills by Meaghan Hohman and Allie Freeburg gave Colorado College the lead for good. Freeburg added three more kills, including one on match point, as CC closed out the match with a 6-1 surge.

"I have never been more proud of this team," said Mullins, who led Colorado College with 17 kills and hit .455 on 33 attacks. "Our mental toughness prevailed when we needed it most. It feels really good to come out and sweep a team like Trinity, especially given they were No. 1 in the nation coming into this weekend.

"We put in the necessary work in practice this week, our coaches prepared a lot of strategy for us, and every single player executed come game time. The constant energy from our bench really helped us get through those rough patches, and they deserve just as much credit for our successful weekend."

Freeburg finished with 13 kills, while Isabella Vasquez recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs.

Aragon-Menzel dished out 42 assists and recorded 17 digs.

Sophomore libero Peyton Hummel produced a match-high 22 digs.

Trinity was led by sophomore middle hitter Emma Funk, who had 11 kills and five blocked shots.

Colorado College picked up where it left off during Friday night's three-set victory, but after CC opened a 20-11 lead, Trinity utilized kills from middle blockers

Emily Ellis and Funk, and four aces by Annie Rose Leggett to pull to within 24-23. Vasquez finally put the set away with her fourth kill.

Avery Tuggle put down four kills as TU never trailed in the second set, then Ellis, Funk and Sara Flynn helped Trinity hold on in the third.
