Stellar Pitching from Starters Sweeps UTD Comets

Softball continued their hot streak sweeping the University of Texas at Dallas Comets this Saturday afternoon. The Celts completely blanked the Comets, preventing them from scoring a single run in 13 innings of action.

Game One: UST 5 UTD 0

UTD notched the first hit of the game with a two-out double but was unable to bring the runner home. When it looked like it was going to be a quick 1-2-3 inning for the Celts Chloe Bennett put St. Thomas on the board with her second home run of the season to make the score 1-0. St. Thomas only added to their lead in the second as Delayne Moreno hit a triple which brought home Jaelyn Simmons. Kayleigh Deakle was next up and brought Moreno home. Then after a quick Rebecca Archibald single, St. Thomas attempted a successful double steal to score Deakle. When the dust settled, the score was 4-0 in favor of the Celts. St. Thomas added one more in the fourth and with the score 5-0, Texas-Dallas was unable to convert a run and attempt a comeback. Then victory was secured as Bailey Tisdale won the 5-0 shutout.

Game Two: UST 8 UTD 0 (Six Innings)

St. Thomas opened up the game in the home half of the first inning scoring four runs. Lindsey Gonzalez kickstarted the rally with an RBI double, then was brought home by Hailey Jackson. Chloe Bennett continued her season tear and scored one herself, then Jackson was brought home by Jaelyn Simmons to make the score 4-0. From there, it was Lindsey Gonzalez who took over the game as she scored another run in the third inning, then reached by an error in the fifth to score Rebecca Archibald. Furthermore, in the sixth inning, Gonzalez capped the game off with a sacrifice fly to score Isabelle Charles that secured the 8-0 victory.

Allison Hughes got the start for the Celts and pitched six innings of shutout softball. Hughes limited the Comets to just five hits and notched four strikeouts in her second win of the season.

Up next, softball returns to action Thursday, March 2nd for Division One opponent Texas Southern. Follow UST athletics for all scores and updates.
