GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern women's soccer team survived a frenzied McMurry War Hawks attack over the final few minutes to hold on for a 1-0 victory.

For much of the game, McMurry was content to bombard Southwestern with shots outside the box rather than puncturing the last line of defense, putting together a 14-8 advantage in shots taken, including a 10-3 edge in the first half. Though eight of those first-half shots were on goal, they mainly were far enough away to be routine saves for Southwestern keeper Johnna Campbell to go into the half with a scoreless game.

Southwestern freshman forward Samantha Hazen continues to scorch the net through the first few games of her career, scoring the game-winner at the 57:30 mark on a pass from Breana Trevino. Trevino delivered the ball from midfield to the right side, where Hazen used the first touch to push the ball ahead to gain separation, sending the ball from the edge of the right corner of the box flying left past McMurry goalkeeper Priscella Caruso into the back of the net.

It was the fourth goal in four games for Hazen and the third game-winner, giving the reigning SCAC Player of the Week 10 points in her young career.

Campbell made two big saves in the final 10 minutes, stopping Kate Holland's attempt at the 80:01 mark, then getting her hands on former Southwestern player Hallie Rutherford's attempt with just over six minutes remaining. With time running out, McMurry moved with the urgency of a fire ant colony whose nest had been kicked over. The War Hawks moved relentlessly, earning two corner kicks in the final two minutes only to have Southwestern defenders calmly clear the ball out of trouble.

The Pirates improve to 4-0 with the victory. Southwestern will host Hardin-Simmons on Saturday in a rematch of the 2019 NCAA Tournament first-round game.
