Late run lifts Tigers past UMass Boston

Colorado College used an 11-3 run during the final 3:08 to defeat UMass Boston, 64-56, in the final game of the 2011 Big Easy Challenge on Saturday night at the Alario Center.

Thirty-five seconds after Quadry Allen tied the game at 53-53 with his fourth 3-pointer of the night, junior forward Ian Rewoldt put the Tigers ahead for good when he converted on one of two free throws.

Senior forward Jeremiah Waters scored what proved to be the winning basket when he dialed long distance with 1:54 remaining.

The Beacons missed five of their final six shots and committed a costly turnover in the closing three minutes. Colorado College slammed the door by making six of seven free throws during the final 28 seconds.

Sophomore guard Ryan Milne scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Tigers, including a 10-for-12 performance at the charity stripe. Milne now has eclipsed the 20-point mark in four consecutive games and a total of five times this season.

Freshman forward Chris Lesnansky hit the 20-point plateau for the second time this campaign, while Rewoldt recorded his first career double-double with 13 rebounds and 11 points. He also dished out a career-best seven assists.

CC was cruising midway through the first after a 9-0 run extended the Tigers' lead to 25-15 with 8:06 remaining. Colorado College went up by 11 after Rewoldt scored with 51 seconds to go, but the Beacons cut their deficit to single digits on a layup by Brian Clarke with 13 left on the clock.

UMB regained the lead with 11:22 remaining in the game when Isaac Jenkins sank a pair of free throws, but the Beacons' final lead was short lived because Milne put the Tigers back in front with a pair of freebies just 1:35 later.

Jenkins paced UMass Boston with 16 points, while Allen finished with 14. Kadeem Coulter grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Tigers squared their record at 5-5 despite playing eight of their first 10 games on the road.

Colorado College resumes Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action next weekend when it travels to Austin College and the University of Dallas on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
