CC forges 1-1 tie with No. 1 Trinity

Box Score No. 22 Colorado College used a first-half goal by sophomore forward Hunter Martinez and a stellar performance by senior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz in the second half to forge a 1-1 tie with No. 1 Trinity.

“We made history today at Stewart Field,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “That was a wonderful, hard-fought game that was very competitive. Trinity is a Division I team in Division III disguise. They have so much talent and they are very organized.

“I'm not disappointed with a tie. It's a real indication of how the game went. This demonstrates we can play with anybody.”

Making only his fourth appearance of the season, Martinez won possession of sophomore defender Andrew Worthington's long header just inside the Trinity penalty box, worked his way free 15 yards in front of the left post, and scored his first career goal on a high shot to the far side.

“What a wonderful thing to have Hunter Martinez score,” Richardson said. “He hasn't played much this year because he is overloaded with residential advisor responsibilities. He's a typical CC Division III student-athlete.”

After taking a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, CC had several other quality opportunities in the first half, but was unable to beat sophomore goalkeeper Matt Cardone a second time.

Senior forward Matt Fechter found a loose ball in the right side of the box during the 27th minute, but his looping shot around traffic went just outside the far post. Freshman midfielder Ryan Huettel  came within inches of giving the hosts a two-goal lead with a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but his shot from 12 yards out on the left went inches outside the right post.

TU tied the game 8:55 into the second half when junior midfielder Yuri Ribeiro collected a pass from senior midfielder Nima Naderi at the right side of the box, worked his way free and put a low shot into the net at the far post.

Despite a 15-3 advantage in total shots during the final 65 minutes, Trinity was unable to register another goal against senior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz, who made six of his season-high seven saves during the second half.

With 3:58 remaining in regulation, and again with 3:57 to play in the first overtime, Marowitz stopped blasts by Ribeiro from the top left corner of the box with lunging saves at the upper right corner.

“We got just about what we expected,” head coach Paul McGinlay said. “Both teams had chances. We had some chances we wish we could get back, particularly in the second half. But to Colorado College's credit, they came out well in the first half and they defended well the rest of the game. To be honest with you, a tie was a fair result.”

Trinity finished with a 20-10 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

CC improved to 11-3-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. TU is now 14-0-2 overall and 7-0-1 in conference play.

“I'm exceedingly grateful to our fans and hope they come again on Sunday,” Richardson said. “I hope we can keep the momentum going to get through our remaining matches so we can keep our regional and national ranking.”

Colorado College plays host to Southwestern University at noon on Sunday in its final home game of the 2012 campaign.
