Schornack and Schmoker lead CC over Millsaps

Senior duo Amy Schornack and Sarah Schmoker fueled the offense for the No. 13-ranked Colorado College volleyball team as it defeated Millsaps College, 3-1, in its final match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Central Intra-Pod tournament held in Conway, Ark., Sunday morning.

Schornack ran the offense as she earned her fourth triple-double of her career with a team-high 54 assists along with 18 digs and 10 kills. Schmoker got her fifth double-double of the season, leading the team with a career-high 19 kills and a season-high 17 digs.

Colorado College started the game off strong, hitting a game-high .333 attack percentage in the first set to take the early lead with a 25-18 win.

Schmoker led CC with seven kills in the second set as the Tigers beat the Majors, 25-19, to take a 2-0 advantage.

In the third set, the Tigers fell behind early, but were able to tie the set at 13 all when freshman Randi Braak and junior Kate Squires combined for a block to earn a point for CC. The Majors regained the lead off of a service error by the Tigers and continued its run with a service ace by Leanne Gilder. Millsaps went on to win the set, 25-18.

Down 7-2 in the fourth set, senior Haley Hamilton helped spark a 5-0 run for the Tigers with a kill and strong serving to keep the Majors attack off balance and tie the set at 7-7. The teams traded points and the set was again tied at 12-12, but CC struck back with a kill by junior Laura Goldsmith to capture the lead. The Tigers kept their lead and went on to win the set, 25-19 to earn the win.

Squires aided the Tiger offense with a career-high 15 kills and hit a team-high .556 attack percentage. Hamilton added 10 kills, while Goldsmith added another nine kills for the offense.

Goldsmith led the defense for CC with a career-high 34 digs. Senior Hannah Varnell and freshman Julie Lawton contributed to 19 and 13 digs, respectively in the back row for the Tigers. Schornack and Braak led the team at the net, each combining for three blocks.

Colorado College is now 28-5 on the season and 13-1 in SCAC play. The Tigers have extended their winning streak to 14 games, which ties for the longest winning streak in program history. CC had set the mark in 1985 when it opened the season winning 14 straight games from Sept. 7-14.

Millsaps fell to 15-11 on the season and 7-6 in conference action.

The Tigers return home for their final home match of the regular-season as they host Colorado State University – Pueblo for senior night on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in Reid Gymnasium.
