Katie Sandfort made the most of her final home track meet by shattering the school record in the mile Saturday at the Colorado College Track and Field Invitational at Washburn Field.
Sandfort won the race in a time of five minutes, 12.74 seconds, more than 12 seconds faster than the previous record of 5:25.02 set by Jocelyn Jenks in 2007.
"Katie was within two seconds of the record last year in a blizzard, so we knew she would get the record today," head coach
Ted Castaneda said. "We expected maybe a 5:18 but certainly did not expect a 5:12. It was an incredible performance and so great to see her do it her senior year and in front of her teammates."
Fellow senior
Leah Wessler finished third in the race with a time of 5:25.2.
Other winners on Saturday included freshman
Annabel Driussi in the 800-meter race and
Asmeda Spalding-Aguirre in the 400-meter hurdles. The Tigers swept the field events, with wins by
Ayla Loper (high jump),
Carly Bonwell (pole vault),
Caroline Alba (shot put) and Jules Stanley (javelin).
Sophomore
McKenna Schnack finished second in the 100, followed by Bonwell in third. Senior
Ellie Swanson posted a pair of third-place finishes (200 and 400), while
Allie Crimmins finished third in the 3,000-meter run.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, April 1, as the sprinters will run at the CSU-Pueblo Open and the distance runners to the Alex Francis Classic in Hays, Kan.
