Box Score Seth Newby and
Sam Markin came off the bench to score a pair of goals as No. 24 Colorado College opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 4-0 victory over Centenary College on Friday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Less than five minutes after entering the contest, Newby struck for the only goal the Tigers needed when he took a cross from sophomore midfielder
Caden MacKenzie and put a shot inside the left post from 14 yards away.
Ten minutes later, Newby made it 2-0 when he collected a feed from
Max Grossenbacher and slotted a shot inside the right post from 10 yards.
"It feels great to get on the score sheet," Newby said. "I couldn't have done it without the great passes from Caden and Max. It was a great team victory."
It marked the second time Newby struck for a game winner and the second time he scored a pair of goals in a game. Last season, he found the net twice during a 3-0 victory over Texas Lutheran on Oct. 20.
Markin struck for his first collegiate goal in the 56th minute after classmate
Tim Huettel beat Rylan Whan to a long serve outside the right post. He stepped around the Centenary goalkeeper and passed back to Markin, who put a shot just from 14 yards just under the crossbar.
A little more than five minutes later, Markin upped CC's advantage to 4-0 when he scored off a feed from Grossenbacher.
The Colorado College defense did its part by allowing just three total shots while recording its third shutout of the season.
Freshman
Theo Hooker did not have to make a save while extending his scoreless streak to 287:37
The Tigers, who improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC, launched 24 shots, 11 of which were on target.
Whan made six saves for the Gents, who slipped to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.Â
"It was a really good start to conference play," Newby said. "We can't get over confident heading into our game against Concordia and then our first road trip of the year."
CC's six-game home stand concludes on Sunday when the Tigers play host Concordia-Moorhead at 2:30 p.m. on Stewart Field.
