Bulldogs Rally to Sweep Doubleheader, Clinch Southwestern Series

SEGUIN, Texas -- #RV Texas Lutheran Baseball utilized late inning rallies in both games in Saturday's doubleheader against Southwestern, clinching the series with a 9-6 win in game one and a 5-4 win in game two at Katt-Isbel Field.

The Bulldogs (19-7, 12-5 SCAC) will go for the sweep of the Pirates on Sunday at 1 PM at Katt-Isbel Field. The game will be streamed on TLU's YouTube Channel, TLU+. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.

Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) hit a go-ahead two-RBI triple in the eighth inning to lead Texas Lutheran to a 9-6 win in game one.

Bourgeois, Kash Durkin (Liberty Hill/Liberty Hill), and Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) all finished with two RBI in Saturday's series opener.

Isaiah Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall) pitched the final 4.0 innings to pick up his fourth win of the season on the mound. Garret Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) started and pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

After the Pirates opened the scoring with a run in the second, TLU responded with four runs in the fourth, with Tyler Helpenstill (Pearland/Lutheran South) hitting a RBI double, Chance Greene hitting a two-RBI single, and Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) closing the scoring with an RBI single of his own.

The Pirates tied the game up 4-4 in the top of the sixth after scoring two runs in the fifth and adding another in the sixth.

Texas Lutheran had an answer in the bottom half of the sixth to retake the lead, 5-4. After a pair of singles started the inning, a two-out infield RBI single from Kash Durkin plated Cooper Jen (Kyle/Hays).

The teams continued to go back-and-forth as the Pirates hit a two-run home run in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.

The Bulldogs put the game away for good with a four-run eighth inning. Jen reached on a Southwestern error and Mason Goudeau hit a single to left before Goudeau cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple. Durkin followed with an RBI double before Brayden Sprencel (Robstown/Calallen) brought in the final run of the game with an RBI single that scored Durkin.

In game two, Texas Lutheran clinched the series win over the Pirates with a 5-4 walk-off win Saturday evening.

The Bulldogs went into the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-3 before Bourgeois tied the game 4-4 with an RBI groundout and Mathew Elizondo (Eagle Pass/Eagle Pass) hit a walk-off RBI single to score Jen.

Drew Burnett (Seguin/Seguin) had a career day, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Chase Bourgeois finished a homer short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Brayden Sprencel picked up the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) started and pitched eight innings and allowed three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Texas Lutheran scored the first two runs of the game with a two-out, two-RBI double down the right field line from Drew Burnett

It would be a pitcher's duel through seven innings before the Pirates scored three runs in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Burnett.

The Pirates hit their second homer of the game in the top of the ninth to take a 4-3 lead before the Bulldogs rallied to walk it off in the ninth.
