Tigers Weather the Storms Against Kean

Box Score Colorado College made the most of senior forward Brandon Ogilvie's first goal of the season and another solid performance by its defense to record a 1-0 victory over Kean University on Saturday afternoon at Stewart Field.

The Tigers were in complete control for more than 67 minutes, launching 18 shots compared to only one for KU. But after a 97-minute lightning delay, the Cougars caught a second wind and made things interesting for the final 22:44.

"Their game plan became dump the ball and hope it skips their way," head coach Horst Richardson said. "That's dangerous because you can get overloaded and rattled. We cleared the ball, but didn't hold it up top, and it kept coming back. We really weathered two storms."

Ogilvie put CC on the board when he pounced on a long volley from Trevor Houghton and slotted a low shot between goalkeeper Brad Watkins' legs from 10 yards away. It was the first career point for the junior defender.

"It was a fun game to play, finally," Ogilvie said. "The defense cleared the ball and Trevor took one touch. As the defense dropped, I dropped with them and he served it perfectly over the top. The ball set up perfectly and I just one-timed it."

Richardson is hoping Ogilvie's 10th career game winner is the first of many for the talented striker.

"Thank goodness Brandon got the winning goal," Richardson said. "That was hugely important for him. Hopefully that will break the ice and there will be many more to come."

Freshman goalkeeper Theo Hooker came up big during the final 10 minutes, making a pair of crucial saves when Kean began applying sustained pressure for the first time. In a span of 20 seconds, he made leaping grabs on shots by Robert Barrera and Steven Zamudio. Hooker has not allowed a score in 197:37.

"Theo has good hands and he exudes confidence," Richardson said.

Colorado College finished with a 23-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. KU didn't take its first shot until Sevag Kherlopian launched a shot from just inside the top of the penalty area nearly five minutes into the second half.

"This is the best team we've played thus far," Ogilvie said. "They scrapped hard and took it to us after the lightning delay. Our will power carried us to the end."

Watkins stopped four shots for the Cougars, who slipped to 1-2-1.

"This victory gives us huge momentum for the next weekend," Richardson said. "We got a win against a really good opponent. Our team is poised to take off."

The Tigers begin Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action next Friday when they play host to Centenary College at 4 p.m. on Stewart Field.
