Swan, Schornack reach milestones in Tigers' win

Two members of the Colorado College volleyball team reached milestones during the season-opening sweep of Howard Payne University in the 2011 Molten Volleyball Pikes Peak Challenge on Friday afternoon at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

With an assist on the match's first kill by freshman outside hitter Kristen Liberty, senior setter Amy Schornack became the second player in program history to record 3,000 career assists. The two-time honorable mention All-American finished the match with 31 assists, raising her career total to 3,030.

Schornack now needs 688 more to surpass Larissa Enns' total of 3,717 set from 1998-2001.

With the 25-13, 26-24, 25-19 victory over Howard Payne University, head coach Rick Swan recorded victory No. 300 at Colorado College.

Swan, who took control of the program in 1998, has amassed a 300-124 record one match into his 14th season in charge of the Tigers. During his tenure that began with a 3-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall College, CC has earned 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the longest streak in program history.

Freshman outside hitter Kristen Liberty led the Tigers by recording a double-double in her first collegiate match. Liberty posted a match-high 12 kills and was second on the team with 12 digs.

Sophomore middle blocker Devin Wilkinson hit .438 with nine kills on 16 attacks, and she also had a hand in six of Colorado College's 18 blocked shots.

Junior Laura Goldsmith celebrated her return to outside hitter with six kills on 17 attacks, and the former libero also paced the Tigers with 13 digs.

Senior outside hitter Tamika Heline recorded eight kills for HPU, while senior libero Kristin Hammond finished with a match-high 14 digs.

CC plays SUNY-New Paltz in Friday's nightcap.

The tournament continues on Saturday when Howard Payne takes on New Paltz at 10 a.m. Colorado College faces Gustavus Adolphus College at noon and wraps up the tournament against Westminster (Mo.) College at 6 p.m.
