Dominant Second Half Leads to 14-7 CC Victory

A dominant performance at both ends of the field during the second half powered the No. 22 Colorado College women's lacrosse team to an impressive 14-7 road victory at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Sunday afternoon.

After clawing out a 5-4 halftime lead, CC outscored the Sagehens, 9-3, during the final 30 minutes to improve to 11-0 and cement its position as the top team in the West Region.

Despite playing its second game in 25 hours, the Tigers grew stronger as the contest wore on and their five-goal explosion during the opening stages of the second half proved to be the difference.

Nursing a 5-4 lead after Nikki Blair scored off a feed from Allie Thuet to close out the first half, Colorado College opened the final 30 minutes with five consecutive goals.

Thuet ignited the pivotal surge with the second of her three goals almost two minutes into the frame, then King scored an unassisted marker a little less than two minutes later to make the score 7-4.

Maggie O'Donnell's first goal gave the Tigers a four-goal cushion and proved to be the game winner. King struck for two more to extend CC's advantage to 10-4, the last of which coming after she picked up a ground ball in the defensive zone and raced the length of the field to score with 17:17 remaining in the game.

King led the Tigers with three goals and three assists, and continued her assault on CC's all-time offensive records.

The junior attacker finished the game with 92 career goals and climbed into a tie for 16th place on the program's all-time list with Kristin Rider (2007-10). In the win over MIT last Wednesday, she took over second place in career assists.

Maggie Sweeney snapped the Tigers' 6-0 run with 16:30 to play after Annie Price denied a shot by Molly Dibble at the other end, but Colorado College returned the favor 51 seconds later on a tally by Bella Beattie.

The Sagehens had an opportunity to trim its deficit when Thuet picked up a yellow card with 12:34 to go, but instead of pulling closer, they watched as CC sealed the victory with O'Donnell's player-down marker with 11:17 remaining.

Thuet finished with three goals and an assist, while O'Donnell and Lauren Pejza produced two apiece.

Pomona-Pitzer opened the scoring when Lilly Thomey found the net just 16 seconds into the game.

The Tigers leveled the score nearly seven minutes later on a goal by Thuet and took their first lead on Robin Hilderman's tally 8:17 into the game.

Markers by Pejza and Avery Bell stretched CC's cushion to four goals, but the Sagehens rallied to tie the game on a pair of scores by Kate Immergluck and one from Kiera Havill with 4:11 remaining in the first half.

After Havill scored, the Colorado College defense clamped down and allowed only three additional goals during the final 34 minutes.

The Tigers finished with a 33-25 advantage in total shots and a 23-19 edge in ground balls.

CC also won 12 of 23 draw controls, three by Avery Melville.

Sophie Murphy led Colorado College with five ground balls and was one of four players with a pair of caused turnovers.

Alena Stern finished with nine saves for the Tigers.

Price stopped 12 shots for Pomona-Pitzer, which slipped to 9-4.

Thomey led the Sagehens with two goals and an assist.

After winning four games in seven days, Colorado College is idle until Tuesday, April 9, when the Tigers play host to Johnson & Wales University in the final home game of the regular season.
