Celts edged by TLU in season finale

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas saw their six-match winning streak snapped Sunday in a 2-1, season-ending loss at home to Texas Lutheran.

Luis Garza (SO/Houston, Texas) scored his second goal of the season for the Celts in the 63rd minute when he redirected a free kick off the foot of Carlos Marquez (SR/El Paso, Texas) to tie the score at 1-1. TLU had taken lead barely four minutes before the Celts responded.

The visiting Bulldogs went ahead for good in the 84th minute when Luis Green headed a pass into the lower left corner of the goal on a TLU breakaway. The goal was Green's second of the contest.

The loss brought an end to the season for the Celts, who were in the hunt for a share of the regular-season Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Celts (10-6, 6-2 SCAC) finished in third place, a half-game behind TLU and one and a half-games behind regular-season champion Colorado College.

In spite of the disappointing end to the season, the Celts still enjoyed a successful 2019 campaign. Their 10 wins were the most since the 2016 season, and the most for third-year head coach Ian Clerihew.

The matches were the final contests for seniors Marquez, Jose Duarte (SR/Houston, Texas), and Nick Seydler (JR/Pearland, Texas). All three players were regulars in 2019 who contributed to the Celts' success.
