Tigers Defeat SCAC Foe Southwestern University

Freshmen Kate Brush and Peyton Classon led the Colorado College women's swimming and diving team to a 173-118 victory over SCAC foe Southwestern University Sunday afternoon at Schlessman Natatorium.

In the first home dual meet against a league opponent in three seasons, Brush won three individual races and Classon won both diving events. Brush won the 200-yard freestyle race in 2:02.64, edging teammate Jio Chang by one second, the 200 butterfly, beating Chang by two seconds, and the 500 freestyle in 5:34.79.

Chang, meanwhile, captured the 100 butterfly and joined Brush and fellow freshmen Clara Sato and Maddie Heynen on the 200 freestyle relay team that placed first with a time of 1:43.48.

Classon, a freshman as well, rolled through both diving competitions, winning the 1-meter event with an NCAA regional-qualifying score of 263.48, and the 3-meter with 230.40 points. Sophomore Jennifer Middleton finished second and senior Riley Wadehra third in each event.

Other winners for the Big Cats on Sunday were Sato (50 freestyle), sophomore Ana Mashek (1000 freestyle) and freshman Millie Benkert (200 backstroke).

What Head Coach Anne Goodman James Said:
"After a tough day yesterday, we came in with a little low energy this morning, but I have to credit our team, they really turned that around and did an awesome job today."

"Our focus was racing, not times. We turned in some very gutsy swims to get this victory. We always have close meets with Southwestern. This was an excellent start to the season."

Colorado College Notes
This was the first home dual meet against an SCAC opponent since Dec. 14, 2016 against Austin College.
Benkert posted a pair of second-place finishes (100 backstroke and 200 IM), as did junior Dervla Moore-Frederick (100 and 200 breaststroke).
Sophomore Kerren Matthews placed second in the 1000 freestyle.
The foursome of Benkert, sophomore Maddie Amick, senior Selma Jukic and Sato was second in the meet-opening 200 medley relay.

Up Next
The Tigers travel to CSU-Pueblo next Saturday, Oct. 19, for a quadrangular meet with Western State, Adams State and the host Thunderwolves.
