Rapid Finish Lifts UW-Whitewater Past CC

Box Score Playing for the third day in a row and the second time in less than 17 hours, Colorado College was unable to keep pace with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the final game of the 2015 Pikes Peak Holiday Classic.

Senior forward Trinson White and junior guard Drew Bryson combined for 42 points to lead the 20th-ranked Warhawks to an 81-58 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Reid Arena.

White, who was named the classic's Most Valuable Player, scored 21 points and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds. Bryson added 21 points for UW-Whitewater, which improved to 9-2 with its sixth consecutive victory, including three in a row in Colorado Springs.

The contest was closer than the final score indicates. The Tigers were within five points at 48-43 after sophomore forward Andrew Maddock scored two of his 14 points a little less than four minutes into the second half.

The Warhawks reclaimed a double-digit lead with just over 14 minutes to play and were up by 15 after White sank a pair of free throws with 12:18 to go.
Colorado College clawed back to within 10 after Maddock scored off a drop-step with 6:19 remaining, but UW-Whitewater outscored the Tigers, 17-4, during the final six minutes to claim the victory.

Senior forward James Lonergan, who earned a spot on the all-classic team, finished with a team highs of 18 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore forward John Hatch added 12 points.

After giving up the first basket, the Warhawks used a 17-7 run to build an eight-point lead on a Bryson layup 6:39 into the game. After the Tigers pulled to within one on a layup by Lonergan, UW-Whitewater scored 17 of the next 24 points to build a 34-23 advantage.

The Tigers cut their deficit to single digits with 44 seconds to play when Hatch buried a three-pointer from the right wing for the last of his 10 first-half points.

UW-Whitewater finished with a 37-22 advantage on the glass and a 9-1 edge in steals.

In the first game of the day, junior guard Jordan Cannon scored 24 points to lead Wartburg College to an 81-71 victory over Dominican University. Junior guard Nick Weber added 16 points and six assists for the Knights, who completed the tournament with a 3-0 record.

Sophomore forward Tim Robertson led the Stars with a game-high 25 points, while junior guard Josh Mayberry added 19.

Joining White and Lonergan on the all-classic team was Jordan Cannon (Wartburg), Rashad Coleman (Concordia Texas), Veon Lassiter (Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham) and Tim Robertson (Dominican).

Colorado College (4-6) begins Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend when Centenary College visits Reid Arena on Saturday and Sunday. Both games tip off at 4 p.m. MT.
