Redlands Over Powers Southwestern

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Pirate men's soccer team got off to a slow start in a neutral-site contest against the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1. The loss drops the Pirates to 2-4-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard first on a free kick by Gabe Ramirez near the corner. His lofting serve found Pat Roraff who put the ball in the back of the net in the 19th minute. UR's Evan Keny-Guyer added another goal in the 27th minute to put the Bulldogs on top 2-0.

The cushion didn't last long, however, as Southwestern pulled within one goal just before halftime. After a fruitless Southwestern corner kick and a pair of fouls by Redlands, Evan Javors found Evan Perkins (pictured) open in front of the goal. Perkins gathered the ball and took a blistering shot that found the back of the net to bring the count to 2-1 with just seconds left on the clock.

The outset of the second half was a much more balanced affair as the Pirates put together solid attacks at goal, keeping the Bulldog defense on their toes. UR came back strong and took two hard shots at goal, but SU keeper Nick Pierce logged saves to keep the game close. The Bulldogs eventually pulled away with a goal by Jamie Griffin in the 80th minute and Nick Eary in the 81st minute to finish with the 4-1 win.

Southwestern trailed 24-10 in shots and 9-3 in corner kicks while Pierce recorded six saves on the afternoon.

The Pirates play Texas A&M Club on Sunday in a non-NCAA recognized game before heading into an off week. They return home on Sunday, September 25th to play Chapman University at 12:00 pm.
