GEORGETOWN, Texas – A very physical, attacking centric match went against the Pirates as they were defeated by #17 Trinity at home on Saturday afternoon. With the loss Southwestern falls to 4-3-1 on the year and 1-2 in the SCAC.
The first half was a seesaw battle with one team attack leading to a counter-attack by the opposing team. The up-tempo game tilted in the Tigers' favor when Kelly Watts put a one-touch pass to teammate Katy Lipscomb who snuck the ball just inside the left post for the go-ahead goal.
Just before the half Trinity made one final push to try to go up by two, but keeper Sarah Nonaka made a fantastic punch save on a bullet shot by Guenthardt and the follow-up ricocheted off the cross bar and out of play to end the threat.
The Tigers pulled further ahead on a header by Euers that was perfectly placed inside the far post. Southwestern had several good looks including a header by first-year Paige Duggins but SU's well-executed attacks were fruitless.
With five minutes remaining Trinity scored once again to put the game out of reach, 3-0, for Southwestern and handing the Pirates their second conference loss.
Southwestern was outshot 18-7 in the contest and in corner kicks as well, 5-0.
Tough games continue for the Pirates as they head to Abilene, TX to face Hardin Simmons University on Tuesday, October 5th beginning at 4pm.
