Tigers capture Molten Pikes Peak Challenge title

The Colorado College volleyball team won the 2011 Molten Volleyball Pikes Peak Challenge tournament title after going undefeated in four games over the weekend.

The Tigers swept both their matches on the final day of the tournament in Reid Gymnasium.

Colorado College beat tournament runner-up Gustavus Adolphus College, 3-2 (26-24, 25-20, 16-25, 19-25, 15-11) in the first day's match.

CC swept all three sets against Westminster College in the final match to wrap up the tournament with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-14) decision to earn the title.

Tournament MVP Amy Schornack led the Tigers with a combined 91 assists in two games on Saturday, which included a season-high 53 assists against Gustavus Adolphus. The senior also added 17 kills on the day.

Freshman Kristen Liberty – an all-tournament team selection – led CC on offense with a combined 27 kills over two games, which included a season-high 17 kills against the Gusties. Liberty also added 27 digs on defense during the day.

Sophomore Devin Wilkinson  also earned a spot on the all-tournament team for the Tigers with 15 kills on the day, which included a career-high 10 kills against Westminster. Wilkinson also contributed to 9 blocks over two games.

Senior Hannah Varnell led the Tiger defense with 37 digs over two games. Senior Laura Goldsmith added 26 digs on the day along with 20 kills. Goldsmith got a career-high 15 kills against Gustavus Adolphus to start the day strong.

CC will be back in action next weekend when they host the Molten Colorado College Invitational on Sept. 9-10 in Reid Gymnasium.
