CC Sweeps Trinity in Top-10 Showdown

Colorado College took over sole possession of first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-17 victory over No. 8 Trinity University on Saturday afternoon.

With their ninth consecutive victory, the 9th-ranked Tigers improved to 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the SCAC.

CC hit .353 as a team, its best offensive performance against Trinity since a 25-13, 25-7, 25-11 victory in a semifinal match of the SCAC Championship on Nov. 6, 2010.

Allie Freeburg led Colorado College with 12 kills, her seventh match of the season in double figures. The junior right side hitter posted a .308 attack percentage with just four errors on 26 attempts.

Sophomore middle hitter Georgia Mullins hit .429 with 11 kills on 21 swings with only two errors.

Junior middle hitter Emily Hewlin posted Colorado College's top percentage of .667 with seven kills on nine attacks with only one misfire.

The teams went toe-to-toe in the first set when the Texas Tigers held a 16-15 lead. A kill by Isabelle Aragon-Menzel sparked a 4-0 run and CC stayed in front by at least two points the rest of the way.

Trinity led 11-8 early in the second set, however Colorado College caught fire and utilized an 11-3 surge to open a five-point lead and TU could get no closer than three.

After falling behind 4-1 early in the third set, CC ran off eight consecutive points and never looked back while posting its most impressive win of the season.

Lizzy Counts conducted the Colorado College offense, dishing out 37 assists. The senior setter also recorded eight digs and hit .429 with five kills.

CC and Trinity meet for the second time on Saturday, Oct. 26, in Sherman, Texas.
 
Colorado College Standouts
Anna Gurolnick led the Tigers with 12 digs and added six assists.
Haley Harris had eight kills and four digs.

Trinity Standouts
Avery Tuggle led TU with nine kills and hit .207.
Annie Rose Leggett had a team-high 12 digs.

Next for the Tigers
Colorado College wraps up its two-day trip to Texas on Sunday with matches against Austin College and Texas Lutheran University at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. CT.
