Garza, Seay, and Williams Go Yard as the Celts Sweep McMurry

Garza, Seay, and Williams Go Yard as the Celts Sweep McMurry

Baseball wrapped up their series with McMurry with a doubleheader this past Saturday. At the end of both games, the Celts secured the series sweep taking game one 5-0 and game two with a dramatic walk off grand slam.

Game 1: UST 5 MCM 0 (7 Innings)

The first inning featured hits from both teams. After a one out base hit from the Warhawks, the Celts took control of the game. The home half of the inning saw Erik Garza jump on base with an RBI to score Dylan Lamb, then Mason Seay followed it up with the first Celt home run of the season. This put St. Thomas up 3-0 heading into the second. The next few innings were quiet, as neither team could generate a run, that was until Erik Garza answered the call. Garza hit a solo shot deep to left field as St. Thomas took a four run lead. The rally was capped off with a Leo Galvan single to score Mason Seay. With a 5-0 lead, St. Thomas took this to the seventh inning where the game was secured.

On the mound for the Celts Landon Murray impressed in his second start of the year. Murray went six innings allowing just four hits and recording nine strikeouts. Brady Watson came in to close out the game and allow just one hit in the final inning.

Game 2: UST 6 MCM 5 (9 Innings)

It was the Warhawks to get on the board first after an RBI single put them up 1-0. From there St. Thomas was unable to answer until the third inning when Dylan Lamb hit a single to score Edward Gutierrez. With the score tied at 1-1, neither team wanted to give an inch, however, it was the Celts who were first to break as McMurry scored on a wild pitch. With a 2-1 lead the Warhawks only added to their lead with three runs in the ninth, making the score 5-1. Then the bottom of the order came up for St. Thomas looking to generate some offense. Another RBI single from Dylan Lamb put the Celts down just three. Then with the bases loaded, Jeffrey Williams delivered the finishing blow with a walk-off grand slam to secure the first St. Thomas sweep of the season.

Freshman Kadin Munson got his second start of the season and went 5.1 innings with three strikeouts. It was a group effort with seven different pitchers combining for the win.

Up next, Baseball plays their first game at constellation field as they take on UT Dallas. Come out and support your Celts Tuesday at 6 PM!
