Bulldogs Fall to Schreiner, 90-81, in SCAC Opener

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran came up short in the 2023-24 SCAC opener, falling at home to the 2023 SCAC Champion Schreiner Mountaineers, 90-81, Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

Mason Wallace (San Antonio/Judson) finished with 26 points (5-of-9 3PT) and eight assists, both career-highs, as the Bulldogs cut the Mountaineer lead to as low as four points, but the Bulldogs weren't able to complete the comeback. Wallace finished in double-figures for the seventh consecutive game.

Xavier Phillips (Austin/Dripping Springs) recorded his first double-double of the season, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite the Bulldogs opening the game on an 11-2 run, Schreiner was able to fight back to tie the game 29-all with 7:36 remaining in the first half. The two teams would trade leads for the remainder of the half with the Mountaineers taking a 43-41 lead into the break.

The Mountaineers would lead by as many as 15 points in the second half as they would overcome the Bulldogs barrage of threes by dominating the paint. Schreiner would finish with a 50-26 advantage in points in the paint.

A 20-9 run over seven minutes cut the Mountaineers lead to 75-71 with 4:38 remaining, but the Bulldogs weren't able to get any closer as the Mountaineers extended its cushion back to as many as 14 points down the final stretch.

The Bulldogs fall to 1-7 (0-1 SCAC) while Schreiner improves to 5-3 (1-0 SCAC) as they held an advantage in every major statistical category.

The Bulldogs return to Memorial Gymnasium tomorrow, Saturday, December 2, as they welcome the rival Trinity Tigers to Seguin. Tip-off is set for 4 PM with a crowd theme of "Rave Night (Wear Neon Colors)." The game will be streamed on TLU+. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
