Crusaders Compete with Southwestern; Edge Schreiner in Straight Set Sweep in Home Conference Matches

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas volleyball team split Friday's matches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Divisional in the Maher Center. The first three sets with Southwestern University (15-8, 8-4 SCAC) were decided by three points or less, as the Crusaders (12-15, 5-6 SCAC) dropped the second meeting of the season to the Pirates in four sets. The Crusaders rebounded to a straight set sweep over Schreiner University (7-17, 2-9 SCAC) in the nightcap.

The opening set featured 16 ties and nine lead changes with neither team able to take control throughout the frame. The largest lead by either side was three when the score was 21-18 in favor of Dallas. The Pirates scored three straight points to knot the game. After sides traded points through the 25-25 juncture, Southwestern claimed the final two points on an attack and reception error by the Crusaders.

It was another back-and-forth set in the next one until the Pirates built a 19-14 lead on a 5-1 run. UD countered with six straight points to go on top and would use that momentum to grab its only set win on the season series. Kills by Anna Stevenson (Dallas, Texas) and Abigail Porras (El Paso, Texas) highlight the 5-2 scoring run that ended the set.

Dallas pushed a strong third set lead to 18-13, but five points in a row were taken by the Pirates. Emma White was on serve and started her stretch of four serves with an ace. Porras and Dayjah Whyte (Round Rock, Texas) ended the surge with three combined kills. Teams battled with Porras making it 23-22, but the next two points by Southwestern had the Crusaders battling to stay alive. Kills from Isabel Garcia (San Antonio, Texas), Ellise Anable (Phoenix, Ariz.), and Whyte kept UD answering set point. A couple hitting errors finally gave the Pirates their second winning set to go over 25 points.

The last set was widest margin that did not occur until the Pirates posted seven of the last nine points. The first and last sets were the only ones SU had more kills with both being 17. The other pair of sets the Crusaders matched the total amount with 14 and 15, respectively.

Whyte matched a game-high 15 kills and only had three errors in 37 total attacks for a .324 kill percentage. She added three block assists. Garcia contributed 13 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while Porras eclipsed double figures in kills with 10. Anable added eight kills and a team-high 18 digs. Larissa Ramirez (San Antonio, Texas) notched 43 assists and 17 digs for a double-double with those categories.

Dallas held an edge in digs (90-88), blocks (7-6), and service aces (7-6).

The Pirates were led by White and Lauren Crabtree with 15 kills apiece to join the game leaders board in that column. Crabtree shined with a triple-double with kills, 31 assists, and 15 digs. Elleanna McGown earned a double-double of her own with 13 kills and team-high 25 digs. White chipped in 15 digs to give the trio of hitters in doubled-digits for kills at least a double-double in kills and digs.


MATCH 2 VS. SCHREINER UNIVERSITY

After a Porras ace started the match, the Mountaineers answered with five points and went up 9-3. Whyte used three straight kills and had four during a 7-0 scoring run that had Anable on serve for six of them to help Dallas regain the lead, 10-9. Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) aced a serve later that capped a three-point streak to break a 15-15 score. That run made the difference as Schreiner could not pull closer than two the rest of the way.

The Crusaders scored the first four points that included kills from Anable and Stevenson. Porras added an ace. They never trailed but Schreiner managed a run in the middle of the set to tie the score at 15-all. Whyte attacked for two more kills and sparked a 5-1 run. Five-of-seven points ended the set going to UD.

Dallas put the match away with its strongest set, posting a .286 hitting percentage thanks to only two attacking errors. Schreiner posted a -.061 with eight kills, 10 errors, and 33 total attacks. Another 4-1 score started the set and the lead eventually grew to eight (13-5). The largest lead of the set was 11.

Whyte and Porras had the most kills on the team with 14 and 11, respectively. The Crusaders hit .246 as a team. Ramirez added 39 assists, two service aces, and two block assists. Whyte and Stevenson each had three blocks to match team-highs with Stevenson having a solo block. The Crusaders logged seven total blocks and service aces.

Kayla Lofland led the Mountaineers with 13 kills, while Amanda Combs contributed eight. Kamryn Ash and Alexis Coronado combined for 24 assists with 14 and 10, respectively. Schreiner ended up with six total blocks, 12 block assists, and three service errors compared to eight by its home opponent.

Dallas finishes up the SCAC Divisional on Saturday vs. No. 6 Colorado College and Centenary College. Four seniors: Kennedy Bradley (Groesbeck, Texas), Stephanie Janysek (Sinton, Texas), Merit Paramo (Wasilla, Alaska), and Pua will be recognized as part of "Senior Night" at the Centenary match.
