Colorado College picked up a critical victory in its quest to earn the third seed in the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
The Tigers moved a game ahead of Schreiner University and own the tie-breaker by virtue of their sweep of the season series after posting a 72-58 victory over the Mountaineers on Friday night at Reid Arena.
CC also posted its 14th victory of the season, its most since the 2011-12 squad finished the season with a 14-12 record.
McKenzee Gertz posted her 10 double-double of the season with game highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Jordan Meltzer added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while
Abby Walz tied her season high of 10 points.
Colorado College led by 12 points after Gertz dialed long distance midway through the second quarter and held an 11-point cushion after 20 minutes.
Schreiner tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter, but each time it got its deficit below five points, the Tigers hit a clutch basket to reclaim the momentum.
After the Mountaineers pulled to within four points with 3:31 into the third quarter, Gertz connected on a three-pointer to extend CC's lead to 42-35.
Schreiner was within three points after Yasmine Arogunjo sank a pair of free throws with 2:27 to play in the third quarter, but
Talia Cloud scored off of an assist from
Mia Thurber a minute later.
A jumper by Gabby Ivarra made the score 46-43 with 1:34 to play in the third quarter, however the Tigers answered with a triple from Thurber that ignited a 13-1 surge to give Colorado College complete control with a 15-point lead with 6:37 to play.
Colorado College Standouts
Rosie Braley scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Talia Cloud finished with nine points and three rebounds.
Schreiner University Standouts
Zahra Cross came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points.
Sydney Williams scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Notes
Colorado College improved to 14-8 overall and 10-5 in the SCAC.
Schreiner dropped to 11-12 overall and 9-6 in the conference.
Next for the Tigers
Colorado College plays host to Trinity University on Saturday at 6 p.m. in its final home game of the season. CC's three seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
