Texas Lutheran Run-Rules Sul Ross 20-7 to Sweep Opening Weekend

SEGUIN, Texas -- #RV Texas Lutheran Baseball hammered Sul Ross State, 20-7, to secure the Opening Weekend sweep with a run-rule win on Sunday at Katt-Isbel Field. The Bulldogs sweep Opening Weekend for the first time since 2019.

The Bulldogs (3-0) will travel to Austin next weekend to paticipate in the CTX Classic hosted by Concordia University starting Friday, Feb. 9 against Hardin-Simmons at 11 AM followed by a 6 PM first pitch against Concordia (TX) Friday night at Tornado Field. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

JT Taylor (Conroe/Fort Bend Christian) pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits to pick up the win. He struck out six batters, matching a career-high, and allowed one walk.

A two RBI double from Chase Bourgeois (Liberty/Clear Falls) gave the Bulldogs an early 2-1 first inning lead.

A hit by pitch, single, and walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs in the second inning before an Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) hit by pitch brought in a run. With the bases still loaded, Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam for his second home run in as many days to blow the game open. Post would score a career-high four times Sunday while going 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of walks.

TLU would continue to pour it on in the fourth, adding four more runs courtesy of an Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) sacrifice fly, a two-RBI single from R.J. Carrillo (Alice/Alice), and a throwing error from the Lobos.

Sul Ross attempted to climb back into the game with a four run sixth inning - shrinking the Bulldog lead to 11-6.

Texas Lutheran batted around in a nine-run sixth inning that included seven hits, three walks, and a hit by pitch. In the inning, Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) hit a two-RBI single, Bourgeois drove in his third run of the game, Carrillo hit a bases clearing double for a career-high five RBI day, Xavier Arias (La Vernia/Nixon-Smiley) had an RBI double, and freshman Cole Cravens (Round Rock/Round Rock) - who made his TLU debut Sunday - recorded his first career hit, an RBI single.

The Lobos would score one run in the top of the seventh to bring the game to its final score of 20-7.
