Defense Challenged Against Defending Champs

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern's defensive line was tested throughout the match against an aggressive Hardin Simmons squad. HSU took the 4-0 win with two late goals in an otherwise hard fought match. The loss drops the Pirates to 1-1-1 on the season.

Hardin-Simmons got the first good looks at goal with a shot on a breakaway followed by a corner kick, but the SU defense held strong and fended off the attack with ease.

The Cowgirls continued to press and managed to score the first goal of the game. Katie Kuykendall played the ball from the middle of the field straight on to Taylor Thigpen in the 9th minute of the contest, giving HSU a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates couldn't get past HSU's defensive line to get a true shot at the cage and trailed in the shot count 7-0 at halftime.

Southwestern stepped it up at the beginning of the second half, winning more 50/50 balls than in the first half, but couldn't find the last connection to make an attack inside the 18 yard box.
HSU went up 2-0 on their fourth corner kick of the game. Kuykendall took the corner and placed the ball on the near post where Courtney Cramer was strategically placed. All she needed to do was get a head on the ball to misdirect into the goal less than on yard away.

The Cowgirls added their third goal when the Pirates weren't able to clear the ball out of the goal and Devon Howard tapped the ball home from inside the 6-yard box. One more goal by Austin Ricker, assisted by Kati McCarty, put the score at the 4-0 final.

Unlucky plays kept SU from making a run on goal as Southwestern was held without a shot throughout the game while Sarah Nonaka recorded nine saves in the contest for the Pirates.

The Pirates look to regroup this weekend as they face the University of Texas Tyler at home on Friday at 2pm.
