#15 Tiger Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Austin

SAN ANTONIO – The 15th-ranked Trinity women's swimming & diving team came out of its winter training with a 227-28 win over Austin College in its first meet of the 2024 calendar year.

Prior to the day's events, seniors Emily Baggett (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood), Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East), and Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie) were all honored as part of Trinity Senior Day as today is the final home meet of the season for the Tigers.

Hagan had a pair of individual wins in the final home event of her career, finishing with the best times in both the 100 breaststroke (1:10.50) and the 100 freestyle (54.13). She was also part of the silver-medal 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:53.78, and the third-place 200 free relay team that finished in 1:44.77 to finish with four medals total on the day.

Baggett joined Hagan for both medalist relay teams, while also finishing third individually in the 200 breast with a time of 2:48.59. She also just missed a spot in the top three in the 100 backstroke, finishing fourth with a time of 1:06.43.

Myers joined her fellow seniors in the 200 medley relay race, and also earned silver in the 200 free relay that finished in 1:43.11. Individually, she added a win in the 50 free after touching in 24.96 seconds, and earned bronze with a time of 5:29.76 in the 500 free.

Junior Elizabeth Molique (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Saguaro) joined her senior teammates for the second-place 200 medley relay, then finished third in both the 100 free (57.91) and the 100 back (1:04.61). Myers was joined by sophomores Jules Wiehrdt (Waco, Texas / Midway), Renee Trombley (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge), and Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted) for the runner-up free relay team. Baggett and Hagan welcomed sophomore Erin Morie (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) and first-year Ellie Devens (Houston, Texas / Tomball) for the 200 free relay race.

Wiehrdt, fellow sophomore Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird), and first-years Allison Ortiz (Houston, Texas / Stratford) and Kyla Foxhoven (Austin, Texas / Westlake) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.98 to open the day's action. Sophomores Bethany Mueller (Buda, Texas / Hays), Lindsay McKinney (Victoria, Texas / Saint Joseph), Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer), and Rachel Brown (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) earned third in the event with their time of 1:57.43.

Burns and Wiehrdt both added individual golds to their days, while Burns also had another relay victory in the 200 free relay at the end of the meet. Burns won the 200 backstroke in 2:11.11, while Wiehrdt was third in the event with a time of 2:14.68. The dynamic duo switched roles for the 100 back as Wiehrdt won with a time of 1:00.07 and Burns was second with a time of 1:01.47.

In addition to Burns, the winning 200 free relay team was made up of first-years Julia Carter (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) and Amy Benson (Newmarket, N.H. / Phillips Exeter Academy), along with sophomore Kylee Hutchinson (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff). The quartet finished in 1:42.39 to win the event by less than a second.

Benson added a win in the 200 free race to her list of accolades in the meet, finishing in 2:00.55 to take the top spot. She was also the runner-up in the 500 free with a time of 5:27.88 that was just over a second from the winning time. Carter was the runner-up to Benson in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.12, while Hutchinson finished third in the 1000 free with a time of 12:03.94.

Prior to the silver in the final relay race, Jacobson also picked up a pair of individual medals. She won the 1000 free with a time of 11:01.14, finishing ahead of relay teammate Trombley and her time of 11:31.88. Jacobson was also the runner-up to Burns in the 200 back, finishing in 2:12.80.

Foxhoven coupled her relay win at the start of the day with an individual win in the 500 free, finishing in 5:26.38 to edge out Benson for the win. Foxhoven also had a runner-up finish in the 100 free with a time of 56.12 seconds and trailed only Hagan in the race.

Morie started her day with a win in the 00 fly with a time of 2:14.53, then finished second in the 200 breast in 2:40.82. Sophomore Sidney McCullough (Centennial, Colo. / Cherry Creek) took the win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:36.92. Peterson finished strong with a win in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.80, then came back in the very next event to earn a bronze in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.21. Brown was the runner-up in the 100 fly (1:03.07), while Ortiz edged her teammate for second in the 200 IM by just 0.16 seconds in a time of 2:18.05. Ortiz was also third in both the 100 breast (1:14.16) and the 50 free (26.05).

Junior divers Brooklyn Fuscone (Hoffman Estates, Ill. / Hoffman Estates), Alexana Heinrich (Lubbock, Texas / Lubbock), and Kara Moss (Houston, Texas / Stratford) swept the podium in the 1-meter diving event. Fuscone won the competition with a score of 240.80, followed by Heinrich in second (173.30) and Moss in third (170.80).

Devens and McKinney both added individual silvers to their relay bronze medals, and Devens also grabbed an individual bronze as well. McKinney was the runner-up in the 200 breast to Hagan with a time of 1:11.17, while Devens was second in the 200 fly in her time of 2:24.70. Devens was also third in the 200 free in 2:04.29.

"We were thrilled to get back to competition today versus Austin College," said Head Coach Cathleen Pruden. "The Tigers did an awesome job of executing their race intentions and showcasing the work they've done since our return."

Up Next

Trinity will compete in two more events this month, beginning with a trip to Georgetown, Texas, to face fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference team Southwestern University on Saturday, January 20. The Tigers take on NCAA I University of the Incarnate Word on January 27.
