The Rhodes College baseball split Sunday's double header against LaGrange College and York College.  The Lynx defeated LaGrange 7-5 behind outstanding pitching performances by junior RHP Matt Burnick and sophomore LHP Max Halasz, before dropping the second game to York, 10-8.

Junior RHP Matt Burnick made his first collegiate start on the mound in the first game, en route to his second victory of the year.  Burnick worked the first 6.1 innings, scattering 9 hits, allowing 4 runs, 2 earned runs, while walking 3, and striking out 2.  Sophomore LHP Max Halasz worked the final 2.2 innings after relieving Burnick.  Halasz allowed 3 hits, 1 unearned run, and struck out 2 as he collected his first save of the 2012 season.

The Lynx offense was led by sophomore OF Walker McWherter in the first game as he went 2-3 with a double, 3 RBIs, and scored a run.  Sophomore 1B/3B Strother White was 2-4 with 3 runs scored and a walk.  Junior 1B Matt Killary was 1-2 with a double and walked twice.  Junior SS Lynden Pindling was 1-3 with a double, run scored, drove in a run, and walked twice.  Junior C Matt Shaw had a huge double in the top of the ninth to increase the Lynx lead to 7-5, as he ended the day going 1-1 with double and an RBI.

In the second game, Freshman LHP James Simpson made his first collegiate start, working 2.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 6 earned runs, walked 4, and struck out 1.  Senior RHP Brian Lainoff then relieved Simpson and was able to keep the game close over the next 3.2 innings as he limited the York offense to 4 hits, 1 run, and struck out 2.  Junior RHP entered the game in the top of the 7th and allowed 3 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 1 in his lone inning of work.  Freshman RHP Blake Harrell worked the final two frames and did not allow a run or hit, while striking out 1 and walking 1.

The Lynx offense was once again led by sophomore OF Walker McWherter who was 3-5 with a double, RBI, and scored a run.  Sophomore RF Patrick Kilkenny was 2-5 with a double, 3 RBIs, and scored a run.  Junior SS Lynden Pindling was 3-5 with 2 runs scored and stole a base.  Sophomore 2B Stewart Martens was 2-4 with 2 runs scored, walked once, and stole a base.  Junior C Matt Shaw was 1-3 with a double.

Rhodes will return to action this weekend as they take on top ranked team in the country, Marietta College, in a three game set this weekend at Stauffer Field on the campus of Rhodes College.
