Stern Saves Tigers in Season Opener at Rhodes

Junior goaltender Alena Stern steered aside a career-high 20 shots to lead Colorado College to a 9-8 victory at Rhodes College on Friday afternoon.

Stern, who made four saves on free-position shots, eclipsed her previous high of 16 saves set during the 2018 season against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Allie Thuet struck for a pair of goals during the first five minutes of the second half to give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish.

Baylee Barker got one back with a little more than 21 minutes to play, and after Avery Bell scored for CC to make the score 7-5, Barker struck again to pull the Lynx to within one with 17:31 remaining.

Colorado College's Delia Freliech notched her second of the game 27 seconds later and then Bell Beattie struck for what proved to be the game winner with 14:40 remaining while the Tigers were down a player.

Madison Rubino trimmed CC's lead to 9-7 with 3:10 still on the clock, but Stern made three saves during the ensuing three minutes before Barker scored a free-position goal with just three seconds to play.

Thuet, who also had an assist during the first half, was one of three Tigers who finished with three points. Eva King and Maggie O'Donnell each recorded a goal and two assists.

Beattie and Freliech recorded two goals apiece.

Barker led Rhodes with game highs of four goals and eight draw controls.
