SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Southwestern wasn't able to get things going offensively or hold off the Banana Slugs on their home field as SU fell to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday 4-0.
UCSC took the lead in the 27th minute off a corner kick and added another goal less than two minutes later to lead 2-0 in the first half. With just over a minute remaining in the half, UCSC added one more goal to send the Pirates into the break down 3-0.
A much stronger second half defensively for the Pirates kept the Banana Slugs from going ahead further until the 62nd minute when they punched in one more goal to lead 4-0.
Southwestern was outshot 20-4 in the loss and had 11 fewer corners, 12-1. Starting keeper Sarah Nonaka recorded two saves while Katherine Rodgers posted four saves in relief.
The loss drops the Pirates to 0-6 on the season. They close out their California trip on Sunday with a game against Mills College at 3 p.m. CST.
