Celts defeat Randall (Okla.) to improve to 13-0

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas continued their season-long winning streak Monday with a non-conference 80-68 win at home over Randall (Okla.).

Freddie Ricks III (Cypress, Texas / Cypress Springs HS) scored a game-high 21 points and handed out six assists to lead four Celts players scoring in double-figures. Nathan Thormaehlen (Katy, Texas / Katy HS) scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting for the Celts.

UST's Joshua Sanchez (McAllen, Texas / McAllen Memorial HS) scored 13 points and pulled in nine rebounds, while Cameron Gims (Cypress, Texas / Cy-Fair HS) chipped in 11 points for the Celts.

With the win, the Celts improved to 13-0 for the season. They resume Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play Friday when they host Texas Lutheran. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The visiting Saints (4-10) jumped out to an early lead, and led by as many as five points when they stretched their advantage to 12-7 with 14:16 remaining in the first half. The Celts then responded with 10 unanswered points as part of a 21-2 run over the next nine minutes of play to establish a 28-14 lead.

UST took a 39-28 lead into halftime before Randall got within eight points within the first four minutes of the second half. Thormaehlen's 3-pointer with 14:24 left to play in the game put the Celts ahead 49-38; the Celts' lead would not slip into single-digits for the remainder of the contest.

Randall was the third team from the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) the Celts faced this season, and the most competitive. In November, the Celts cruised to 99-71 win over Arlington Baptist, and then crushed Dallas Christian College 116-70 the following week.
