Rebounding Margin Leads to Men's Basketball Loss

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Pirates forced seven more turnovers but were out-rebounded 40-24 on Friday evening as they fell to Centre College 64-49.

It was slow going in the early part of the game but Centre managed to pull ahead by nine, 19-10 with just under nine minutes to go in the first half. Southwestern made three three's and three jumpers in the next six and a half minutes to pull within one, 26-25, with 2:31 left on the clock and trailed by just three, 28-25 at the break.

As the second half got underway Centre scored the first four points of the second half to maintain a slight lead, but SU remained within striking distance. Demetrice Spearman's three with 8:49 to play pulled the Pirates within five, 47-42.

Southwestern was held to just seven points in the final eight minutes to the game while Centre took advantage of their opportunities from the free throw line to post the 64-49 final.

Logan Hurley led for Southwestern with 10 points and was the only Pirate in double figures. Michael Cantu led in rebounding with six. Centre's Jeff Mullaney led all scorers with 19 points.

The Pirates fall to 1-15 overall and 1-6 in the SCAC. They head to face Sewanee in Tennessee on Saturday night.
