Colorado College nearly erased a six-goal deficit during the final 22 minutes, but John Sutro's score with 1.5 seconds remaining in the game was waved off and Sewanee escaped Washburn Field with a heart-stopping 16-15 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Playing a man down, CC got the ball back with 8.5 seconds when freshman defender Brennan Troy blocked a shot at an open net by Sewanee's Henry Burns. Goaltender Andrew Harwood took an outlet pass at midfield and then hit Sutro to the left of Sewanee goalie Tal Wharton.
 
Sutro worked his way past a Sewanee defender, drove parallel to the cage and fired a shot past Wharton. However, after an official's discussion, the goal was taken away because Sutro was ruled to have dove at the Sewanee crease.
 
The decision kept the contest from going to overtime, where Colorado College had won its last six games.
 
Sewanee led 14-8 after Hayden Hunt scored his third goal of the game with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter, but CC countered with three goals in a span of 90 seconds to grab the momentum heading into the final 15 minutes.
 
Coby Petau ignited the run with 1:38 remaining in the third, and then Tom Haller and Jack O'Donnell struck 15 seconds apart to cut the Colorado College deficit to three.
 
Tom Haller's man-up tally 45 seconds made the score 14-12, and then Max Rieser sliced his way through three defenders at the midfield line and beat Wharton to pull CC to within one for the first time since late in the third quarter.
 
Cameron Acuff's shot from the right wing gave Sewanee a two-goal lead, but Petau got that one back with 9:11 to play with a shot from low in the slot after taking a feed from Tyler Borko.
 
Sewanee's George Greer notched what proved to be the game winner with a little less than five minutes to play, but Parker Woo answered with 31 seconds to play after Borko forced a turnover, setting up a thrilling final 31 seconds.
 
Colorado College finished with a 49-39 advantage in total shots, while Sewanee built a 34-29 edge in ground balls.
 
Tom Haller scored four goals to lead CC, which slipped to 5-3.
 
Borko added two goals and dished out five assists.
 
Harwood finished with eight saves for Colorado College.
 
Drake Gillis led the CC defense with four caused turnovers, while Jack Ammons grabbed five ground balls.
 
Wharton played the final three quarters in goal and finished with 12 saves.
 
Ryan Stubitz was the difference in the game for Sewanee, winning 25 of 33 faceoffs and picking up 16 ground balls.
 
Burns led Sewanee with seven goals, including six during a 10-2 run that gave Sewanee a 13-7 lead early in the second half.
 
Hayden Hunt and Acuff added three apiece.
 
Colorado College returns to action on Saturday, March 23, against Springfield College.
