Tigers end day perfect with win over New Paltz

The Colorado College volleyball team ended the first day of the 2011 Molten Pikes Peak Challenge perfect after beating SUNY New Paltz, 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 29-31, 25-12) at Reid Gymnasium on Friday night.

Laura Goldsmith had seven of her 14 kills in the first two sets to help CC get the early two-set lead over New Paltz.

In the third set that saw six lead changes, the Tigers and Hawks fought back-and-forth with New Paltz taking the edge at 31-29.

The Tigers rallied back in the fourth set to earn the win with an Amy Schornack kill.

Senior libero Hanna Varnell led the Tigers on defense with a career-high 31 digs, while Goldsmith added a season-high 26.

Schornack helped lead Colorado College's offense, dishing out 43 assists for a season high. She also added 18 digs for her first double-double of the season along with seven kills.

Freshman Kristen Liberty led CC on offense with career-high 16 kills on 39 attacks. Liberty also got eight digs on defense for the Tigers.

Senior Meredith Ballard and sophomore Devin Wilkinson assisted in four blocks each on defense for CC. Ballard also added 10 kills on offense for a season high.

The tournament continues on Saturday when Howard Payne takes on New Paltz at 10 a.m. Colorado College faces Gustavus Adolphus College at noon and wraps up the tournament against Westminster (Mo.) College at 6 p.m.
