Celts Collect Another Point

Celts Collect Another Point

The University of St. Thomas men's soccer team earned another point in a hard-fought road battle Sunday afternoon in Georgetown, TX, against the #18-ranked Southwestern Pirates. The Celts currently have 11 points, placing them fourth in the SCAC table with four matches to play. The 0-0 draw brings the Celts' record to 7-4-2 overall and 3-2-2 in SCAC play.

The match looked similar to the Celts' Friday night outing at Texas Lutheran. The Celts started slow, built some momentum, and had chances but could not find that elusive tiebreaking goal. Both teams showcased solid defensive efforts from kickoff throughout the 90 minutes. The Pirates outshot UST 15-11, but both sides were limited to 4 chances on goal. St. Thomas pushed forward slightly more than Southwestern, as indicated by the 3-2 corner kick advantage.

The Celts had an early opportunity when Justin Burke fired a shot, but the SU Keeper blocked it. UST did not get another clean chance until Diego Lazo's shot was blocked in the 29th minute. Needing the three points, both teams raised their intensity in the second half, but neither could break the deadlock, and the game ended with two clean sheets.
