Volleyball Splits a Pair with Schreiner to Close the Regular Season

Volleyball Splits a Pair with Schreiner to Close the Regular Season

Game One: UST-1  SU-3

The Celts dropped game one of their doubleheader with Schreiner in four hard-fought sets. Three of which were decided by only two points.

The opening set went back and forth for the entirety of play. Neither team was able to gain a real advantage as the lead would fluctuate nearly every rally. With the score knotted up at 23, two straight kills from the Mountaineers would give them set one. With the next set emulating the first, the Celts would soon find themselves at risk of being swept by Schreiner.

The third set came down to the wire as the Celts and Mountaineers traded momentum throughout the contest. With the score tied at 24 a piece, a Schreiner service error and Trinity Atkins' kill would keep the Celts alive as they took set three, 26-24

Schreiner would close the door on the Celts in the final set. A quick start by the Mountaineers would overwhelm UST as they would fall three set to one.

Game Two: UST- 3  SU-2

The back end of the doubleheader featured the Celts winning a five-set thriller to earn the series split with Schreiner.

It was all UST to open up the game as they would smother the Mountaineers, constructing a 17-5 run to give them the convincing 25-13 victory. However, Schreiner would bounce back with quite the second set, nearly flipping the score and evening things up at one. They would stay hot and repeat their performance in the next set, putting the pressure on the Celts by leading two sets to one.

The fourth set was as close as a 26-24 set could be. As the Mountaineers did everything they could to close out the series, the Celts refused to lose and would record a game-high 15 kills en route to forcing a fifth set.

In the ever-so competitive final set, UST would lead for the majority of play but Schreiner was never more than a few points behind. Alaina Lanik would record her ninth kill of the game which would give the Celts the 3-2 win over the Mountaineers.

Volleyball will play in their first SCAC Conference Tournament next week as they travel to Austin College.
