Marshall, Texas – The Centenary men's soccer team earned its second tie of the season on Thursday evening as the Gents finished in a 2-2 draw against the East Texas Baptist University Tigers in a non-conference contest at Cornish Soccer Field.
The Gents (2-3-2) fell behind 1-0 just over a minute into the match as the Tigers (1-2-4) converted on a penalty kick by Bruno Palmieri, but the Maroon and White evened the score in the 44th minute as freshman F Zack Bowers (Missouri City, Texas) scored his first-career goal with the assist credited to junior MF Brennan Amato (Denham Springs, La.).
The match was tied at 1-1 at halftime and then ETBU's Jacob Wenzel gave his team a 2-1 lead with Esteban Leonardo getting the assist at the 52:39 mark. Senior F Rene Escobar (Cypress, Texas) tied the score at 2-2 with his second goal of the season in the 68th minute with junior F Ron Masti (Houston, Texas) tallying the assist.
Centenary junior Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) made his first start since Sept. 3 against McMurry and second of the season and made four saves in his 90 minutes of action. ETBU GK Bryan Carrillo also went the distance and recorded one save.
The Tigers out-shot the Gents 19-8 and each team took five corner kicks. Centenary was whistled for eight fouls while ETBU was called for five and picked up the only two yellow cards of the match.
Centenary and ETBU have now met eight times and the Gents lead the all-time series 3-2-3. The Gents will return home on Saturday to face Howard Payne University in a non-conference contest set for 11 a.m.
