IRVING, Texas -- No. 3 Texas Lutheran opened the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Softball Championships with an extra-inning, 1-0, walk off victory over fourth-seed Schreiner at UD Softball Field in Irving, Texas, on Friday.
With its win against the Mountaineers, TLU improves to 36-4 on the season. The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to 19 games.
Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls), the newly crowned 2022 SCAC Pitcher of the Year, pitched a complete game, eight-inning shutout in Friday's opening round. The shutout is Texas Lutheran's NCAA-leading 20th shutout of the season. Strother remained undefeated on the year, improving to 19-0 as she allowed three hits over eight innings. She struck out 10 batters, marking her ninth start with double-digit strikeouts.
In a tightly-contested opening round, the game remained tied through seven innings as the two teams traded zeros on the scoreboard. After a single and stolen base from Chassety Raines (Spring/Klein Collins), to start the inning, Casey Martin (Pearland/Pearland), the 2022 SCAC Player of the Year, advanced Raines to third on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Faith Hernandez (Dinuba, Calif./Dinuba), who was named to the All-SCAC First Team after Friday's game, reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Raines, to walk it off as Texas Lutheran advanced to the next round.
Overall, the Bulldogs out-hit the Mountaineers by a 6-3 clip. Sarah Metzer (Sugar Land/Dulles), also an All-SCAC First Team selection, led the Bulldogs with two hits.
