LATE THREES DOOM PIRATES IN LOSS TO CENTRE

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Centre College made three, three pointers in the final 6:24 to defeat Southwestern 72-54 on Friday night. The loss is the fourth in a row for the Pirates as they fall to 4-13 overall, 2-6 in the SCAC. Centre improves to 12-3 on the year and 7-1 in the conference.

Southwestern shot 40% from the floor and 50% from three point range but were still down by five points, 28-23, at the break after being out-rebounded offensively 8-3. 

Centre held onto a slight advantage as the second half got underway and the Pirates pulled within two points, 40-38 with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Colonols responded with a 9-1 run to go up by 10 points with nine minutes left. Southwestern continued to fight and came within four points, 52-56 with 3:37 on the clock, after Nick Caputo was fouled in his three point attempt and converted on all three free throws.

The Pirates were unable to find the offensive attack they needed to pull even and Centre made 10-11 from the free throw line to close out the game.

Caputo had 14 points to lead SU while Robbie Hanley added in 12 and was also the leading rebounder with seven boards. Centre's Greg Ross led all scorers with 19 points.

More than half of Centre's field goals came from beyond the arc as they made 10 more three's than the Pirates (13-3).

Southwestern faces another tough game on Saturday night as they take on DePauw beginning at 8:00 pm.
