Pirates Get First Sweep of Season with Wins at Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas- The Southwestern softball team notched their first wins of the season, defeating Hardin-Simmons 3-2, 5-2 on Saturday. The wins improve SU to 2-4 on the season while HSU falls to 0-4 overall.

In game one Southwestern struck blood first with a home run by Kaitlyn Pavlicek (pictured) over the left field fence in the second inning. Pavlicek drove in SU's second run of the game in the fourth inning, bringing in Kayla Irvin and handing the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Hardin Simmons tied the game in the fifth with a lead off double by Meyer. After a Pirate error and a couple of singles the game was tied at two a piece with two innings to play.

The Pirates got the game winner in the sixth off the stick of Irvin who drilled a homerun over the left field fence to put Southwestern up 3-2. Lauren Zearfoss closed things off from the mound after Lyndsy Maus threw four solid innings.

Pavlicek led going 2-3 from the plate with two RBI's in game one and Zearfoss received the win after pitching three innings and allowing no hits, walks or runs while striking out six. Starting pitcher Maus went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and one strike out.

Southwestern wasted no time getting things rolling in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding another in the second with strong team offensive play.

The Cowgirls added two runs of their own in the fourth to pull within one run, 3-2, but Southwestern scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings and locked down defensively to close out the 5-2 win.

Taylor Turpin had a sensational game two, going 4-5 from the place while Tessa Galloway was 2-3 with two runs scored. Zearfoss once again earned the win, going seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out nine.

The Pirates continue their weekend of heavy action with a double-header at home against UT Tyler on Sunday beginning at 1pm.
