Tigers roll to 73-54 victory over Centenary

Box Score If you are going to do something, do it with style.

Four Tigers registered double-digit points and a pair grabbed double-figure rebounds as Colorado College rolled to a 73-54 victory over Centenary College on Sunday afternoon at Reid Arena.

Junior guard Courtney Tyus scored a game-high 16 points and sophomore forward Danielle Davis recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds en route to CC's first victory of the season.

"It's been a long time coming," Tyus said. "If you compare our first seven games to the last six, we're two different teams. We took a huge step forward and figured out how to get the win."

What made the victory even more satisfying is all nine players contributed.

Freshman forward Korbyn Ukasick finished with 12 points, her ninth game of the season in double figures, while sophomore guard Katie Wirth added 10 more.

Sophomore guard Katie Waters set a career high with 10 boards.

The Tigers owned the lead virtually the entire game, except for 39 seconds during which the score was tied in the opening two minutes.

After trailing by as many as 10 points early, the Ladies fought back to within a point on two occasions late in the first half, but Colorado College used a 10-1 run during the final 3:01 to build a 32-22 lead at intermission.

Centenary got to within four points after Lizzie Moran drained a three-pointer 2:36 into the second half, but CC used an 11-2 surge during the ensuing 3:21 to push its advantage to 13 points with 14:03 remaining.

The Tigers put the game away with a 12-2 run culminating with a 3-pointer from Davis that gave her team a 59-40 lead with 7:34 to play.

"It's the first time we really came together and played well as a team," Davis said. "The victory gives us confidence and if we keep working hard, more wins will come. A double-double would have been irrelevant without the victory."

Colorado College, which improved to 1-12 overall, is tied for fourth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 1-2 mark in league play.

"We've been in all three conference games and haven't made the plays (in the first two)," head coach Liz Doran said. "We dictated the way the game went today and didn't let it come down to a pivotal three-minute stretch.

"This was a good follow-up to Friday's game when we played Austin College tough."

Moran paced Centenary with 14 points, while Briana Edwards compiled a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Next on the agenda is CC's first-ever SCAC games at Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

"The first victory is always the toughest to get," Tyus said. "Now we have some momentum going into next weekend."
