SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southwestern’s men’s
soccer team almost knocked off #9 Trinity on Saturday night, but
eventually fell to the Tigers 3-2 in double overtime. With the loss
SU falls to 5-9 on the season and 1-5 in the SCAC.
Trinity was the first on the board in the 27th minute on a goal by
Grossman, assisted by DeCosta, and the Tigers would retain the 1-0
lead going into halftime.
Southwestern jumped to action in the second half, scoring six
minutes into the period when David Lozano found Alex Keller who
evened the score 1-1.
The Tigers took the lead again just six minutes later after a
hand-ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick that gave Grossman
his second goal of the game.
Trinity seemed to have the win secured until David Lozano set up
teammate Evan Perkins (pictured) who found the back of the net with
just under five minutes remaining to even the count at 2-2 and send
the game into overtime.
The Pirates went on the attack in the overtime period, sensing they
had the Tigers on the ropes, but narrowly missed the goal on a
couple of scoring opportunities.
During the second overtime, Trinity’s fifth double-overtime
match of the season, TU was able to take advantage of their 11th
corner kick of the match as Naderi found Llobet for the
game-winning goal.
Southwestern was out-shot 26-13 and had seven fewer corners (11-3)
than the Tigers. Sophomore keeper Nick Pierce recorded nine saves,
while TU’s Johnson had four.
The Pirates head out of town on their final road trip of the season
this weekend. They will take on Sewanee on Friday at 5:00 pm and
Oglethorpe on Sunday at 11:00 am.
