SCOTT HALPER OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a senior men’s soccer player from Franklin Lakes, N.J., has been selected as the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 18.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Halper is the epitome of a team player. His voice was often heard in practice and in games throughout his soccer career with the Gents the past four seasons, and his kindness and generosity was also felt throughout the Shreveport-Bossier community.

He volunteered throughout his time at Centenary at Common Ground Community, Inc., which is a non-profit community outreach organization in a low-income neighborhood that serves the residents through basic needs through volunteer work.

“I mainly helped with the food pantry and administrative matters during my time here”, said Halper. “It was really important for me to find time between my work schedule, soccer, and class work to be able to take part in that organization."

“I really believe in what they do. It really felt like it was a great thing for me to be doing”.

Halper, a Business Administration major, was also very active on the Centenary campus. He served as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and rewrote the bylaws for the committee and got it approved before the end of his term in order to improve the structure and flow of the organization for the future.

The New Jersey native who has acclimated to life in the South excelled on the field as well as he played in 69 games in his career with 43 starts. His 10 goals in his career ranks second all-time in the division III era in program history, and his three-game winning goals are also second-most in program history. He has twice been named the SCAC Scholar’s List.

"Scott has always been a person with high integrity and holds not only himself, but the entire group to high standard," said Centenary head coach Kyle Symczak. "He is not afraid to have those difficult conversations when someone is not living up to their potential and it has really helped our team mature. He is always there for people on the team and we are lucky to have a role model like him in our program."

“Scott is one of those players that gets it”, continued Symczak. "He is a program first person and understands that everything is for the benefit of his teammates. Scott is also one of the more competitive players we have had here at Centenary. He loves to win, and that mentality has really been a driving force in this program. I also must mention that his competitiveness extends to the classroom, because I do not remember the last time I saw anything lower than an “A” on his grade reports."
