KATARINA MAKSIMOV OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a senior striker on the women's soccer team from Richmond, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 4.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Maksimov, who is majoring in nursing, volunteers weekly at Angela House, a home for women who were recently incarcerated. Angela House helps its clients re-enter society, and teaching skill sets needed to find jobs and housing are among its programs.

“I’ve learned a lot about them, and they’ve taught me a lot in regards to being grateful for everything that you have and the position that you’re in, and also to have patience and not judge, because you never know what someone is going through,” Maksimov said.

In addition to her service at Angela House, Maksimov has excelled in the classroom and on the soccer field. She has maintained a 3.45 GPA and was a nominee for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

On the field, Maksimov led the Celts with eight goals in 2019, which tied for fifth in the SCAC. She scored 33 goals during her UST career, making her the school’s all-time leader in goals scored.

Maksimov also served as one of the Celts’ team captains, and said her experience at Angela House helped her as a team captain.

“This has helped me in a leadership role as a captain on the soccer team, it goes hand-in-hand with how you approach your teammates and how you talk to them,” Maksimov said. “Maybe they just had a bad day, and you don’t know what’s going on, so I think that’s important for a captain to have that quality.”
