ANDREA SELKOW OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a junior center on the women's basketball team from Turlock, Calif., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 24.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Service has long been an important part of Andrea Selkow’s life. The junior center for the Austin College women’s basketball team began giving back and endeavoring to help others when she was in high school in Turlock, California, and it’s carried over to her time in Sherman.

Before she got to Austin College, she was the vice president of a community service oriented group called Interact Club, and it was during that time she learned the importance of helping those who need it. Selkow received help and advice herself, and became determined to provide that same sort of support for others. Beginning her sophomore year at Austin College, she started to volunteer as a small group leader through her church, working with high school students in Sherman. Every Wednesday, she spends time with students from the local community, serving as a mentor and offering advice.

Through this ministry, she’s also been able to work with several outreach programs, with the intention of positively impacting the community. One of the events she’s participated in is Project Shine, in which the high school students she works with lead games and crafts for low income children, while she and other group leaders offer groceries and clothing items to their parents.

Selkow has also volunteered at Reba’s Ranch House, an organization that seeks to give families of patients at Texoma Medical Center a place to stay to eliminate the high cost of hotels while their loved ones are receiving treatment. She has also volunteered at a food pantry in Sherman, helping to provide groceries for families in need.

Even with her diligent service work, Selkow has also excelled in the classroom and become an important member of the nationally-ranked ‘Roo women’s basketball team, in addition to spending much of her free time working in the research lab on campus.
