WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD - MOMENT #20
April 26-27, 2002
Participating on their home track, Rhodes College women score a then-record 253 points in outdistancing second-place DePauw University by 96 points at the 2002 SCAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Rhodes' senior Jessie Hunt totaled 55 points with victories in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, triple jump and javelin and finished fourth in the 100-meter dash and the long jump.

At the 1995 SCAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Hendrix College, Trinity University edged Rhodes College by six points (121-115) in the closest finish in the history of the event. The conference title was also the first-ever for the Trinity women. Currently, the program is tied with Rhodes College for most all-time women's track and field championships with seven.

Trinity University, behind 11 individual titles, won its sixth SCAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship and third in the last four years at the 2006 conference meet held on the campus of Sewanee-The University of the South. The Tigers totaled 224 points - 81 points clear of second-place DePauw University. Trinity senior Stephanie Hankins, with victories in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles, earned SCAC Women's Athlete-of-the-Year honors for the third time in her career, making her just the second woman (Heather Stone, Sewanee - 1998, 1999, 2000) to win the award three times.

Marie Brandewiede of Rhodes College finishes in seventh place in the 1,500 meter run at the 2004 NCAA Division III Women's Track & Field Championships to earn all-America honors for the second time in her career in the event. The senior finishes in a time of 4:35.03.

The Rhodes College women’s track & field team wins its third-straight SCAC title at the conference championship meet held at Hendrix College. The Lynx finish with 228.5 points, 39 points ahead of runner-up DePauw University. Samantha Specht paced the way for the Lynx as she won individual titles in the triple jump, long jump and 200 meters and also finished fourth in the 400 meters as she earned 2010 SCAC Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors. With the victory, Rhodes becomes just the second team in league history to win three consecutive conference championships. It is the first time since the Sewanee women won three straight from 1992 through 1994.

Rhodes College sophomore Marie Brandewiede and Trinity University senior Sarah Lough finish in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,500 meter run at the 2002 NCAA Division III Women's Track & Field Championships at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., giving the SCAC two all-Americans in the same event for the first time ever. Brandewiede posts a finishing time of 4:38.97 while Lough crosses the tape at 4:39.28. Freshman Natalie Shaffer of DePauw University almost gives the SCAC three all-American performances in the 1,500 as she finishes ninth with a time of 4:43.50.

Junior Jessie Hunt of Rhodes College, the reigning SCAC Female Track & Field Athlete of the Year, becomes the program's first all-American as she finishes fourth in the heptathlon with 4,505 points at the 2001 NCAA Division III Women's Track & Field Championships held at Milllikin University in Decatur, Ill.

The SCAC produces three all-America performances at the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Trinity University junior Emily Loeffler finishes third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:28.31 – less than one second out of second place. DePauw University sophomore Lauren Reich finishes fifth in the 1,500-meter run and earns all-America honors in the process. Reich, who broke DePauw's 1,500 meter school record for the fourth time this season, finished in 4:29.17 which was 1.95 seconds faster than her school-record time in Thursday's trials. Rhodes College sophomore Kristen Forbes, the 2008 SCAC Athlete of the Year, finishes seventh in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.10. She just missed all-America honors in the 200 meters, finishing in ninth place with a time of 25.35.

The DePauw University women totaled a conference-record 256.50 points and won their third track & field conference title and first since 2001 at the 2005 SCAC Championships held on the campus of Rhodes College. Trinity was the runner-up with 160 points and Rhodes was third with 78.5. The 96.5-point margin of victory was (and remains) the largest in SCAC history.

Senior Amy Paine of Rhodes College finishes second in the women's 1,500 meter run in a time of 4:29.09 to earn all-American honors at the 2003 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

The SCAC has three different females produce all-America performances at the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. DePauw University junior Lauren Reich adds to her list of athletic accomplishments after picking up all-America honors in two events. She opened the final day of competition with an eighth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run in 4:33.29 before placing seventh in the 800 meters in 2:14.68. Reich is the first SCAC female student-athlete to earn multiple all-America honors at one national meet since Sewanee's Heather Stone was a three-time all-American at the 2000 championships. Centre College freshman Emily Niehaus came through with an all-America performances on the opening day of the championships. Niehaus finished eighth in the hammer throw event with a toss of 164' 2" (50.04 meters). The following day, Trinity University senior Emily Loeffler placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn all-America honors for the second consecutive year.

The SCAC has a then-record four different individuals earn all-America honors (with five total all-America performances) at the 2010 NCAA Division III Womens' Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Baldwin-Wallace College in Cleveland, Ohio. DePauw University's Courtney Lauer earned all-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the heptathlon. She tallied a school-record 4,581 points in the event. DePauw teammates Lauren Reich and Nicole Stein, as well as Rhodes College's Molly Buck also earn all-America honors. Reich placed ninth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:32.10. She also earned all-America laurels in 5,000 meter run with a third-place finish (17:01.71). Stein broke her own school record in the 400 meter hurdles by finishing fourth in 1:01.94. Buck finished third in 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.69.

Heather Stone of Sewanee-The University of the South runs the 1,500 meters in a speedy 4:31.30 to finish second in the nation at the 1999 NCAA Women’s Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships held on the campus of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. She also finishes eighth in the nation in the 800 meters, earning all-America honors in both events, to give Sewanee a 30th place finish in the team standings. Trinity University senior Christal Seahorn finishes seventh in the javelin throw (133' 6") to give the SCAC its third all-America performance of the meet.

The Rhodes College women claim their conference record fourth consecutive track & field title, cruising to a comfortable 54.5 point win over second-place DePauw University at the 2011 SCAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on the campus of Rhodes. It is the seventh overall title for the Rhodes women, tying the program with Trinity University for the most SCAC women's track and field titles all time. Senior co-captain Molly Buck amassed almost a fourth (41 points) of the team's point total as she claimed victory in the 400m hurdles in a national automatic qualifying time of 1:01.85 and victory in the long jump with a distance of 17'6” (5.33m), second in the 100m hurdles in a national provisional time of 14.77 seconds, and second in the 400m dash with a time of 57.80 seconds. She also helped the Rhodes' 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams to victory.

The SCAC has a record six different individuals earn all-America status at the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Track & Field Championships at Ohio Wesleyan.

DePauw University's Courtney Lauer finished third and Hendrix College's Elizabeth Krug finished seventh in the heptathlon.  Lauer broke her own school record with 4,906 points and Krug was the top freshman in the field, crushing her own school record by 249 points with 4,648 total. Centre College's Emily Niehaus took fifth place in the discus with a mark of 177'11", setting a new school record that she previously held with a throw of 176'9.65". Neihaus' teammate, senior Kasey Jackson, qualified for the finals of the 400 hurdles by setting a new school record during the preliminaries with a time of 1:01.27. She was able to save her best performance for last, as she broke her previous school record time during the finals by completing the race in 1:00.63 to take third-place overall. Erica Cook, who ends her career as the most sucessful athlete in Millsaps College Track & Field history, placed sixth in the final of the 100 meter dash to earn all-America honors. She finished four-tenths of a second off the winning time with a 12.24. Rhodes College's Sandy Henin placed placed fifth in the 800 meter run to give the SCAC six female all-America performances for the 2011 championship meet. The senior crossed the line in 2:12.98.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD - MOMENT #5

Trinity University junior Christyn Schumann wins her third individual national title and second straight in the high jump at the 2005 NCAA Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Her winning jump is the same height that won last year – 5’9 1/4” – and earns the Tigers 10 points and a team finish of tied for 24th.

Hendrix College junior Julie Coats finishes sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to earn all-America honors and three team points for the Warriors, who finish in a tie for 55th.

Trinity University sophomore Christyn Schumann wins the high jump competition (her winning jump was 5’9 1/4”) at the 2004 Division III Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships held in Decatur, Ill., on the campus of Millikin University. It is the 12th individual title for a conference student-athlete and ninth in the SCAC era.

Heather Stone, a senior from The University of the South, wins the 1,500 meters (4:27.40) and places second in the 800 meters (2:10.67) and seventh in the 3,000 meters (9:48.27) to earn all-American honors in all three events at the 2000 NCAA Division III  Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. Sewanee finishes tied for 11th in the team standings on the back of Stone’s performances. DePauw University junior Beth Broering earns all-American honors for her performance in the high jump with an eighth-place finish (5' 3 3/4").

Stone's national championship in the 1,500 meters completed her Indoor/Outdoor sweep in 2000 as she became just the fifth CAC/SCAC student-athlete to win a national title.

At the 2006 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill., Trinity University's Christyn Schumann wins her fourth national title in the high jump. The senior clears 5’ 9 3/4" to earn her third straight title in the high jump at the outdoor championships (she also won the event at the 2005 indoor national championships). She ends her career with more individual national titles than any other SCAC student-athlete (since equaled by Centre's Chrys Jones) and earns the inaugural SCAC Woman-of-the-Year award the following month.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD - MOMENT #1
April 28-29, 2000
Sewanee-The University of the South senior Heather Stone becomes the league's only three-time Female Athlete-of-the-Year selection and posts the top individual point total in the history of the conference meet (men's or women's) when she won six events and totaled an incredible 62.5 points - outscoring five teams by herself - at the 2000 SCAC Women's Track & Field Championships held on the campus of Rhodes College.

Stone posted individual victories in the 400 meters, 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters, 10,000 meters and 400 meter hurdles. With the exception of her finishing time in the 400 meters, each victory established a new SCAC championship meet record for that particular event. Her 2000 championship meet times in the 1,500 and *3,000 meters remain conference records.

Stone's performance at the 2000 SCAC Championships earned her a third consecutive Female Athlete-of-the-Year honor and she finished her career with a record 14 individual titles at SCAC championship meet competition.
