
ROCKWALL, Texas -- The Trinity University men,
behind three individual event wins, increased their lead to 91
points over second-place Southwestern University as the second day
of competition at the 2014 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships
concluded Thursday evening at the Rockwall ISD. Official

Trinity currently has 329 points, followed by Southwestern with
238 points. University of California-Santa Cruz is third with 190
points, Colorado College is fourth with 149 points, Centenary
College is fifth with 106 points and Austin College sits at sixth
with 38 points.
Sophomore Andrew Thiesse started the evening in grand style for
the Texas Tigers, winning the 500 freestyle in a SCAC meet record
time of 4:33.45. The time was also good for a NCAA 'B' cut. A pair
of freshmen finished second and third as Mason Emery of UC-Santa
Cruz touched at 4:40.04 and Evan Jones of Southwestern followed at
4:40.94.
In the men's 200 IM, it was Trinity sophomore Jon Hoffman who took
his turn at the top of the podium, shattering the SCAC championship
meet record by over a second and finishing in a time of 1:52.99.
Hoffman's winning time was also good for a NCAA 'B' cut. Freshman
Casey Colella of UC-Santa Cruz placed second in a time of 1:53.91
and sophomore Colin Chupik of Colorado College was third with a
finishing time of 1:54.41.
In the men's 50 free, Stephen Culberson made it three-for-three
for the Trinity men in both individual wins and SCAC record-setting
performances. The junior blazed to a 20.25 finish, notching a NCAA
'B' cut and breaking a SCAC championship meet record that had stood
since 2009. Junior Adam Thomas of Trinity was second in a time of
20.88 (also a NCAA 'B' cut) and freshman Simmon Belaineh of
Southwestern placed third in a time of 21.27.
SCAC history was also made in the final men's event of the
evening. The Southwestern men's team - consisting of Ty Lapinski,
Kyler Wood, Shelby Hall and Simmon Belaineh - won the program's
first-ever conference relay, outkicking UC-Santa Cruz and Trinity
to the finish and winning the 400 yard medley relay in a time of
3:27.68. The Banana Slugs completed the relay in a time of 3:28.60
to nip the Tigers who completed the event in a time of 3:28.81.
Competition continues on Friday with preliminaris beginning at
