LAYNIE KOVACS OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a sophomore libero from McKinney, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 30 through Sunday, October 6. SCAC Volleyball Release (Week 6)

Kovacs had an outstanding weekend defensively as the 'Roos went 2-0 and improved to 5-0 in conference play with big wins over St. Thomas and Colorado College. Lovacs averaged 6.67 digs-per-set after a pair of three-set sweeps, charting 23 digs against UST before wrapping up the weekend with 17 against the Tigers. She also added nine service aces, including seven against Colorado College, and had zero reception errors in 22 attempts with five assists. 

Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore rightside Courtney Pope of Trinity led the 21st-ranked Trinity volleyball team to a 2-1 record over the weekend road trip in New York, capped by a win over #20 New York University on Saturday. Pope notched 14 blocks in 13 sets played, averaging 1.08 blocks per set as a rightside player. She picked up six blocks to go with 10 kills in the 3-2 win over Smith, then matched her career-high with 14 kills and a .429 hitting percentage in the 3-1 win over NYU. Senior libero Geneva Nedrow of Southwestern was crucial on the Pirate's defense, helping her squad go 2-0 in conference play for the week. Nedrow averaged 5.22 digs per set with 29 digs in the Pirates' 3-2 win against Schreiner. In nine sets played against opponents, Nedrow only recorded one reception error and was 98.5 % on the receive this week. Offensively, she helped the Pirate with fourteen assists (seven per game). Junior defensive specialist Jenna Palomarez of Schreiner had 31 digs (6.20 per set) and scored on her serve at 57 percent of the time as the Mountaineers fell 3-2 to No. 17 Southwestern. Senior libero/defensive specialist Kara Spice of St. Thomas averaged 5.67 digs per set as the Celts went 2-1 in SCAC play over the week. First-year middle blocker Andie Lozano-Lomeli of Texas Lutheran had four blocks (two solo; two assisted) in the Bulldogs' 3-0 sweep of Huston-Tilltson, the team's only match of the week. Senior defensive specialist/libero Hannah Page of McMurry had 13 digs (4.33 per set), helping the War Hawks to a 3-0 conference sweep of Dallas on Friday. Junior libero Isabella Martinez of Concordia (Texas) posted a game-high 23 digs (5.75 per set) and went a perfect 13-13 in receptions in Saturday's match against Southwestern.
