Five SCAC Volleyball Players Earn AVCA All-Region Recognition

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released the All-Region awards Thursday and five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference players earned the recognition. Complete AVCA Release

Trinity University had three athletes recognized and Colorado College had two honorees on the All-West Region squad.

Colorado College's Lizzy Counts and Marguerite Spaething and Trinity's Katrina Lieberman and Madeline McKay each received first-team nods.

Jade Schoenberger of Trinity received honorable mention recognition.

Counts, a junior setter from Oakland, Calif., was named to the team for the second consecutive year. A two-time All-SCAC First Team selection, Counts became the third player in school history to record 3,000 or more career assists (she currently has 3,156), and led the Tigers to a .268 team hitting percentage during the regular season, which ranked first in the conference and second in Division III.

Spaethling, a junior middle blocker from Larkspur, Calif., led the league during the regular season and was 13th nationally with a single-season best .376 hitting percentage en route to earning SCAC Player-of-the-Year honors. A four-time SCAC Player-of-the-Week (twice offensive; twice defensive), she was also fifth in the conference in kills (320) and fifth in kills per set (2.96). Defensively, she is third in the league in total blocks (93) and blocks per set (0.86).

McKay made the All-Region rolls for the third consecutive year. The senior outside hitter from Lubbock Texas, was an Honorable Mention recipient for the past two seasons. Earlier this season, McKay was selected for the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for the third time in a row. McKay has chalked up 362 kills this year, and 1,231 in her career. She stands in 10th place in Trinity's career record books.

Lieberman, a junior setter from Tustin, Calif., was previously tabbed for the All-SCAC First Team. She is ranked seventh in Division III total assists, with 1,217 to her credit. Lieberman also is ranked 10th nationally in assists per set with 10.77. In Trinity's record books, Lieberman is currently 12th in the total single-season assists mark.

Schoenberger made the AVCA All-West Region Honorable Mention Team. The senior right-side player from Palo Alto, Calif., is second on Trinity's team with 56 total blocks (.55 per set) and is third in total kills with 230 in her column. Schoenberger was tabbed for the All-SCAC Second Team last month.
