
SUWANEE, Ga. - Week three saw the first weekend of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play as Trinity University hosted the West-Central Crossover. Trinity (4-0) and Southwestern University (3-0) each finished the tournament undefeated to grab the early leads for first-place in the SCAC standings.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College saw
its 13 match win streak come to an end this weekend, but not before
topping Birmingham-Southern, Millsaps and Rhodes all by scores of
3-0. The win over BSC was the first for the ‘Roos since
Birmingham-Southern joined the SCAC, and Jessi Fleming led the way
with 11 kills and six total blocks. Fleming also had a big match
against Millsaps with 15 kills and eight total blocks while Jordan
Anderton added 33 assists. Against Rhodes, Fleming again led the
way with 15 kills and seven total blocks and Anderton added another
33 assists while Jenna Wilson had a team-best 16 digs. On Saturday,
the ‘Roos lost to Southwestern in three games. Fleming once
again led the ‘Roos with nine kills and six total blocks
while Anderton added 25 assists.
Birmingham-Southern went 1-3 at the SCAC
West/Central Divisional this past weekend. The Panthers fell to No.
25 Austin College and No. 20 Southwestern University on Friday, and
split on Saturday with a win against Millsaps College but a loss to
No. 11 Colorado College. BSC stays on the road for its next two
matches, traveling to LaGrange, Ga., to face Piedmont College and
Berry College on Saturday at LaGrange College.
Centre hosted their annual Centre College Classic
on Saturday with six teams participating: Centre, Hanover,
Transylvania, Spalding, Asbury, and Piedmont. Centre played
in-state rival Spalding first before facing off against
out-of-state rival Hanover. In the first match Centre came out with
a 3-0 victory, but fell in the second match to Hanover 3-2.
Sophomore outside hitter Laura Hench had 20 kills on 48 attempts
with only six errors. Senior opposite Kelly McCoy had 17 kills on
42 attempts with on three errors for the day. Next up for the
Colonels will be their first conference weekend as they travel to
Greencastle, Ind. for an East/West SCAC match-up.
No. 13 Colorado College junior middle blocker Emily Perkins had nine kills to pace CC in a 3-0 victory over Rhodes College in its first match. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Schmoker had 12 digs to lead the defense. Sophomore middle blocker Haley Hamilton had three blocks. Perkins had a match-high 12 kills and three aces as the Tigers completed their day with a 3-0 triumph over Hendrix College. Schmoker posted double-figure kills in back-to-back matches to help CC split a pair of contests on Saturday. She had a career-high 14 kills to open the day, but CC dropped its first match of the season against a Division III opponent with a 3-1 setback to host Trinity. Junior middle blocker Erika Pirotte led the defense with 12 digs, while Perkins and Hamilton each had a pair of blocks. Schmoker had 11 kills as the Tigers came from behind to defeat Birmingham-Southern College 3-1 in their final match of the weekend. The Tigers will be on the road again next weekend for SCAC matches at Greencastle, Ind. CC will play host DePauw and Oglethorpe on Saturday, and then Centre and Austin College on Sunday.
DePauw improved to
12-2 on the season after winning four of five matches during the
week. The Tigers opened with a 3-1 win at Franklin before finishing
second at the DePauw Invitational. In the tournament, DePauw
finished 3-0 in pool play with a 3-2 win over Dominican (Ill.), a
3-0 win over Kalamazoo and a 3-0 victory against Capital.
Heidelberg defeated DePauw in the title match by a 3-0 score. Ali
Smith and Kylee Lehrman were named to the all-tournament team. For
the week, Kristen Chynoweth led the team with 2.4 kills per set and
a .288 attack percentage. Ali Smith averaged 8.6 assists per set,
while Lehrman averaged 0.9 service aces. Kate Carrico averaged 4.4
digs per set, while Chynoweth averaged 0.8 blocks in the five
matches.
Hendrix picked up its first SCAC win, a 3-2
affair, over Rhodes College in the final match of the Trinity
University SCAC West vs. Central tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors now stand at 3-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play
after dropping their first three matches of the cross-divisional
tournament in straight sets to No. 14 Trinity University, No. 11
Colorado College and No. 20 Southwestern University. First year
Melissa Clement paced Hendrix against Rhodes with 15 kills and
seven blocks. First year setter Danielle Young tallied 36 assists
and junior libero Kim Larson added 24 digs.
After defeating cross-street rival
Belhaven College at home on Wednesday night 3-1,
Millsaps (5-8, 0-3 SCAC) traveled to San Antonio,
Texas, for the SCAC West-Central Cross Divisional to open the
conference schedule. The Majors were unable to find a victory over
the weekend and finished the week with a 1-4 record. On Friday,
Millsaps fell 3-1 to both Southwestern University and Austin
College and could not turn things around Saturday losing to
Birmingham-Southern College and host Trinity University, both by
scores of 3-0. The Majors look to rebound with a home match against
Mississippi College Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at The Hangar
Dome.
Oglethorpe went 3-0 on the week by beating
Brewton Parker (3-0), Maryville (Tenn.) (3-0), and LaGrange (Ga.)
(3-1). The Stormy Petrels return to the court on September 26 when
they compete in the SCAC East/West Crossover at DePauw. Oglethorpe
stands at 8-4 on the season after winning its last five
matches.
Rhodes finished 0-4 this weekend at the SCAC
West-Central hosted by Trinity University. In a five set loss to
Hendrix, Senior Kelsea Everett led all attackers with 30 kills. In
four matches on the weekend, Everett totaled 50 kills for a 3.57
kill per set average.
Sewanee topped Oakwood 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-17)
in straight sets n Saturday night with its second win of the
season. Sammie Maddox led with nine kills, while Erin Brahm had 26
Assists. Brahm also had four service aces. The Tigers are 2-7 and
will play Austin College, Trinity, Southwestern and Oglethorpe this
weekend at DePauw.
No. 18 Southwestern looked impressive at their
first conference crossover this weekend. The Pirates dropped just
one game to go 4-0 over the weekend and improve to 10-3 overall and
3-0 in conference. SU first matched up against Millsaps and took
the Majors down in three games. Birmingham-Southern was next on tap
for Southwestern and the Pirates emerged victorious, 3-1. The
Pirates swept Hendrix and Austin College. Audra Gentry and Lindsay
Thompson led the way in kills for Southwestern with 42 a piece on
the weekend while Sam Lingamfelter had an all-around solid
performance. Lingamfelter averaged an astounding 5.46 digs per game
including 28 against Austin College, with no ball handling errors
throughout the duration of the crossover. Southwestern will head to
Greencastle, Ind. over the coming weekend for SCAC West/East
Crossover action.
No. 11 Trinity finished 4-0 at the SCAC
West-Central last weekend, highlighted by a 3-1 win over
11th-ranked Colorado College. Trinity was one of just two teams to
go unbeaten at the tournament, putting the Tigers in a tie for the
early lead in the SCAC standings. Trinity also defeated Hendrix,
Rhodes, and Millsaps over the weekend, finishing with a set record
of 12-2 in the four matches. This week, the Tigers continue SCAC
play at DePauw University for the first SCAC East-West Tournament.
Trinity will face Centre, Sewanee, DePauw, and nationally-ranked
Southwestern at the tournament. The Tigers return home on October 1
for a single match against Our Lady of the Lake University.
