ABILENE, Texas —
First year Nina Mitrofanova defeated two regionally ranked opponents today to become the second Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis player to win a Flight A singles Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall Regional Championship.

Mitrofanova opened the day with a victory over Trinity University senior Zoe Kaffen, who finished last season as the 15th-ranked singles player in the West Region, in two sets (6-4, 6-4) to advance to the championship match.

In the finale, Mitrofanova faced East Texas Baptist University senior Elisa Kendall, who finished last season ranked 14th in the region and won last year's ITA Southwest Regional Championship; winning 7-5, 7-6 to clinch the championship.

Mitrofanova joins Kate Daugherty as Pirates who have won the ITA Southwest Regional Championships with Daugherty winning in 2017 in her first year. The victory earns Mitrofanova the program's fifth All-American status in the past three years.

With the victory, Mitrofanova earns a spot in the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia this October, which will pit the nine regional champions and seven at-large bids against each other.
